Importing Data From VWS cvs file

I have three years of weather data collected via Ambient Weather’s Virtual Weather Station software courtesy of my Davis Vantage Pro 2 system. Currently the station is still running on VWS, however I am interested in switching to WD. I have installed the latest (trial) version of WD as well as imported three cvs files from VWS. Weather Display has claimed to import them however I do not know how to integrate the data in WD to see trends or past data. Thank you for your help.

AJ

make sure its one month of data being imported
then you should see that data under view, averages/extremes, for the month imported

.zip and email me a sample month data and I will test here

VWS does not export a csv file in monthly format. It is a yearly format which I was able to import, or at least WD did not issue an error. However, I do have TXT files that are in monthly format. Is there a way to utilize(import) those?

Thank you

you need to break down the yearly csv file into separate file months at a time

another way is if you have wunderground data, you can export that to .csv then import that into WD

Brian,

It does not import. I saved the file as a .csv. Tried the import function but it never imported. The software never returned a completed message and I do not see the data in Averages and extremes. What I am doing wrong. Here is a copy of the month of June 2011 in csv format.

WD expects every 1 minute data
you only have 1 data point recorded for each day (very limited data )

Could that be the wrong logfile? It doesn’t even have a time field :?

This is what Wunderground produced for a monthly cvs file. My other cvs file from Ambient Weather is a minute by minute file. However, it does not export the data on a monthly basis. It only does it for the whole year.

OK, per windy’s post above, that year file is the one you need, you just need to separate out each month into a separate file by opening it in notepad or other text editor.

Do I then save is as month-year.cvs or does WD require a specific format?

Here is a sample of a portion of May 2009. Is this syntax correct for WD?

are we talking wunderground csv file format now, or still vws csv file?

This is not working. I have separated out a couple of months from the CSV file and created a new CSV file to import. It does not import. So what am I missing here?
This is becoming entirely to complicated to do a simple import of archived data. WD should be able to handle any CSV file regardless of how its time frame break up. Maybe the software writer
will add this to the “to do list”? 30 days on a trial is certainly looking to be to short of a time frame to experiment and make the switch.

I’d like to purchase the software, but this situation leads me to think of what else may be a hidden problem.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Windy,

I separated out a couple of months of a VWS CVS file because you say WD can only handle monthly time frame.

I created a new VWS CVS file (by cutting and pasting from the origianl CVS file to the new file) and called it Jan2009.cvs. I tried to import it via WD and the software does NOTHING. No import. So whats the deal? Spending way too much time for what should be a simple procedure.

Any help at this point is a plus.

the import does in fact work if the data to import is in the expected format

its then a simple 1 click task for each month of data

your data obviously is not in the correct needed expected format

if you could .zip and email me the data you are trying to import , I will test/check here

I will see what I can do. The files are huge and I don’t think the ISP will support such a large file.

By the way I am using the 1 click approach in WD (Import VWS file) to import but, again, the limitations of WD expecting it to be in a monthly format seems to be the road block here, yes?

not sure why you call that a limitation
WD stores the data monthly, not as yearly files

and so to import the data , it needs to be aligned that way

others have done this VWS csv file import with no problems

I will check /test with the file you have sent me

there seems to be some confusion here

the files you have sent me, the monthly files, are already converted to WD logfile format logfiles

so the final step now is to convert those logfiles to data file, via, action, convert WD logfiles to data files
(select each logfile in turn and click on convert)
I tested that with one of the logfiles you had sent me, and that worked

Brian. Yes there was an important part of the instructions not mentioned. Thank you for clearing that up. All the data appears to be converted and is now visible. A payment is forthcoming!

glad you got it sorted, and thanks for purchasing
