What about http://wxresource.blogspot.com/ ? How long had that been up?
That was 100% ALL ME! I used no one else’s code, that sites been up for a while!
There were a bunch of sites (yours I assume?) linked off there, as I recall none of the dates on the links were recent, and I’m pretty sure one of those linked sites was where I copied the code posted earlier in this thread. Of course it’s all gone now so I can’t check, but if I was mistaken I withdraw and apologize for the statement.
Yes, there was a bunch of blogspot sites i had b/c i liked playing but for free at that time. However, all of that was my own work…except www.alwx.blogspot.com which turned into www.alabamaweather.org. The ONLY site that i ever linked to w/o permission was carterlakes site…an apology letter will be issued to the owner of www.carterlake.org later this week, which will not be made public!
Kenny,
None of your site is your own work… the entire site is someone else’s work, except for the radar images from GRLevel3. Don’t you see? That’s the greatest problem with your site… it’s a collection of other people’s stuff.
Let’s go through it:
Site code - CarterLake.org
Webcams - Local TV stations
Forecast - NOAA
Lightning - US Military
Advisories - NOAA and WU
Climate - CityData.com
Astronomy - Not updating but was from CarterLake.org
Current Conditions - NOAA
If that’s your goal Ken… if you’re wanting a website so that you can look at the various content, then congrats, you accomplished your mission. But don’t give us excuses.
layout=yours
content=mine except the SkyChart page!
I think this has dragged on long enough and I can’t see any real purpose in continuing this discussion in public. Those directly involved can continue by email if they want to.
To summarise…
- If you want to use someone else’s site as a template, ask their permission first.
- If you want to use someone else’s site as a template make sure it’s sanitized and contains only your own details before it goes public.
- Don’t use content from other sites without the permission of the site owner.
Those rules aren’t new…they’ve been basic netiquette for about as long as I’ve been using the web (sometime around 1994!)
The key part about this discussion is the one above, in particular a site that has been promoted on other sites to get people to go there, but yet had not been appropriately ‘sanitized’… heck, it’d been slapped up without any care whatsoever.
As you said, if basic netiquette was followed then none of this thread would’ve existed in the first place.
Very true, OZ… (sorry Chris, I have to make one more comment on this).
Having this thread express the umbrage at the what happened is instructive for folks who haven’t been on the net as long as others, and can show the consequences of disregard for proper netiquette.
I too started in 94 on the net managing (and building stuff with) the firewall/internet group at Intel. Sally Hambridge in our group was author of the Netiquette Guidelines RFC 1855, and the contents are still germane today (usenet/NetNews stuff replaced today with boards like this ).
When I redid my site earlier this year, I was very fond of the tight layout of conditions on www.capitolaweather.net (it’s a GREAT site), so I’d asked permission from Ken to use the layout for conditions on my home page, and he generously consented. I’d changed some things and added a few, but I did ask and get permission first, and I leave a visible ‘Thanks’ on the page with a back-link.
Great summary of the basic rules Chris!
Best regards,
Ken
