Did you miss me? Things probably ran better without me tinkering all the time!
We had a great week on the Isle of Man, helped considerably by @hcorrin turning on the ‘fantastic weather’ option on his weather station. Now we’re back home to prepare for a couple of weeks of disruption. After nearly 100 years the old iron nails used to hold the slates on our roof are starting to suffer from ‘fatigue’ and we’re losing slates on a regular basis. The roofer is coming on Tuesday to completely strip the roof and re-fit it…with galvanised nails this time. So lots of scaffolding, noise, dust and people climbing all over the house!
Weather permitting I’ll use this opportunity to take my mast down and fit the replacement solar sensor. Access should be a bit easier whilst the roof work is underway.

Hope you had a good trip! I’ve always wanted to visit the Isle, my son in law has told me quite a bit about it from trips he has taken there. So much amazing history. I’ve never been out of North America though.
I have travelled over most of the US, some of Mexico, and most of eastern Canada, which is a massive distance altogether, but these days the longest I travel is down the hill to the lake.
Is the roof actually slate or are the tiles just called slates? We have a metal roof that sounds amazing in a good storm.
Even though Britain is much smaller than North America there are many places here that I’ve never visited.
I’ve been to the Isle of Man a few times though. This visit was made with a couple of long-time friends from university. One of them grew up in Cumbria (about 40 miles away across the sea) and was able to see the island from her bedroom window as a child. She’d never visited though so we decided to fix that!
It’s real slate - Welsh Blue slate to be more exact. Mined in North Wales - about 60 miles away across the Irish Sea from here. There are slate mine tours if you ever decide you wanted to visit the area. Roof slates have a lifetime measured in centuries so they’ll probably outlast the house!

The weather was perfect and the rain only came after we left.
