I have a dedicated pc for linux development now!

and a keyboard/screen/mouse switch (just have to double hit the scroll lock key on the keyboard…really great!)
so i am working on the linux version alot now
new version ready soon!

:greenjumpers: :wav:

a bit of disastor here
i was trying to create partitions/format another HD, to copy the data to, as it should be a faster HD…
i definatly was only working with that drive…but not really knowing what i was doing…
then all of sudden, the letters on the screen became garbage
so i pulled the plug

now the mount points and swap partitions are a bit of a mess…linux will boot to the login, and i can login, but commands are not accepted (well some are)
the directories I can change to…but dir will not work
i cant run the x windows either

so I will have to install mandrake from the CD onto the new HD…and then see if can access the original HD…still…and copy everything across

anyone got any other suggestions/fixes?

yes, you can burn on of the linux distro that run on a cd, like http://www.knoppix.net/
with that you could copy the files to the new hard drive…
also Mandrake, should  have an option not to over write all your files in your home directories…
I am not sure why the new hard drive would cause that… unless it is ntfs format

next problem i have is this old IBM pc i cant configure the bios to boot from the CD rom drive
so i wil have to use the kids PC to get a new mandrake onto the other HD…
and then i should be able to just copy across the extra directories needed (i.e all my programs) and it should be OK (should be better than windows, which has program settings stored in the registyr, etc, yes?)

whew
i got it all resurected onto the new HD
took all day!
just as many pitfalls as windows!
