Hesitation between LaCrosse stations...

Hello to everybody

Actually I own a WS3600 station…everybody knows (me too) that it’s not the “top of the top”…wind speed accuracy problems (may be resolved by buying a 1wire anemometer)…
Aftear spending many hours on the net to read reviews, comparisons, etc…sorry for my boss !!! hum hum…I have seen 3 models which have flashed a little more:

  1. the Davis VP2…everything has been said about it…the top but also in price
  2. the Lacrosse WS-2010 (US model) seems OK but 3 minutes transmission time !!!
  3. the Lacrosse WS-2510 (US model) seems OK too but 3 minutes transm. time too !!! a solar sensor more…

the 2) and 3) have very attractive prices on the net via Ebay USA (cheaper in USA + Taxes than in Europe)
the 1) can be bought at 415$ + the Weatherlink at 149$+ shipping + taxes…it’s cheaper than in Europe too but another budget

So I have many hesitations…modifying my WS3600 installation by adding a good anemometer (the 1wire), and cabling it to obtain a 32sec refresh rate or buying another station (one of the three above)…
If somebody has some advices to give me…I’ll be very pleased to read them to…refresh my mind and my brain

Thanks a lot

Have you also looked at the Oregon Scientific station? Based on what I see on here they are very trouble free compared to the LC.

Hi Nikos…

Yes I have looked at the Oregon WMR968…it looks interesting too and the sensors look good too…you troubled my mind a little more… I think that my night will be occupied by images of weather stations…damned!!

Regards

From what I have seen reported on these boards and my experience with my La Crosse WS-2310 I would have to recommend that:

A: If the money is available get the biggest bestest Vantage Pro

B: If money for the above isn’t there and you get a La Crosse get the 2310 and run it wired. At least it updates every 8 seconds or so (in wired mode). Positioning will be a big factor with any La Crosse.

Personally I recently recommended the following to a new user asking my opinion because they could not afford the VP.

La Crosse 2310
1-wire wind instrument
1-wire humidity

Total cost including USB adaptor (not including wiring)
$292.00

this also doesn’t take into consideration software but the pricing for that will be the same regardless of station…

The other option would be to just go all 1-wire, total cost about $330.00 (priced based on current Hobby-board pricing and with a power injector)

BUT without a doubt I believe that everyone here would Vote for the VP if money isn’t a factor…

Thanks Bob for your very complete reply. I agree with you with your opinion about the VP2…I’ve found that it is possible to buy the VP2 Wireless for 413$ which is a very correct price compared to the prices found here in Europe…but it’s still a lot of money #-o

Yes the 2310 is an attractive model too…very similar to my 3600 (the wind instrument and rain gauge are the same).

So, I’ve decided in the evening (with the help of a good glass of white wine…) to keep my 3600 but to make some ameliorations: to cable my unit so I’ll have a shorter refresh time, to replace the wind instrument by a AAG v3, finish my Stevenson shield (I have a solar powered fan that I will place on top of it which will take the eventual heat off), build my website (a big task I think)…lot of work!!

A big hello from Belgium (under rain and 13

I can promise you that the 1-wire wind will be far superior to the La Crosse as far as recording wind speed. However as I have the version 1 I can’t use WD to see the direction and am using the La Crosse for that which does have more recording points and in theory should be more accurate.

I also can tell you from observations that the 1-wire direction indicator swings much more wildly then the La Crosse and it seems to me that the La Crosse may actually be more stable as far as direction in light gusts…

You do need to make sure that WD will be able to split your 3600 wind and use the 1-wire for recording from Brian before you order anything IMHO

looks like i will have to add option to use a 1 wire weather station for windspeed/direction with a 3600 station
(which is a good idea, that way you get 2 second windspeed updates with a 3600 station!

 hum hum…Brian…far from me to put you on work just after few days of holidays…
but that will be a wonderful idea…with a good thing for me…I spare the buying of a new station for the moment…
I will look closely for the updates…so I will have the possibility to only have 1 wind instrument on my roof instead of 2… #-o

Thanks in advance Brian for your work… :multi:

its a good idea, and I just need to duplicate the code already in place
i will add it today and let you know when its ready

and hopefully others will take up the ability to do this

hi
try a new 10.28z zip download in about 1 hour from now…and i have added ability to use a dallas 1 wire statioons windspeed/direction with a la crosse 3600 station (so you can get every 2 seconds windspeed updates…good deal me thinks)

still a few things more to add/fix/improve on before i get to 10.29, LOL
its been a good break for people hopefully, the stop in version numbers…(although I saw one posting about someone complaining why the updates had stopped!, LOL)

Waouw!! Thanks Brian…I will download it this evening and take a look at the new option.

Damned !! This man never sleeps… I understand now why this software is really the best…it’s not only for the possibilities but with the quality of service provided 8)

With this modification is it confirmed that I can display the wind direction/speed provided by the 1wire instead of the Lacrosse ?? If affirmative…THANKS A LOT for all the WS3600 users !!!

thats affirmitive
