:angryfire: Go Daddy was supposed to change over my web site to a non-windows server and screwed it up on 1-Feb-07.
I was told it would be up to 24 hours for the change, well they screwed it up! After 24 hours I was told it would be another 48 hours to fix it, of course it’s not fixed. I asked them Sat to make my files available to me from back up so I could have a copy of the files from the server, I called today since it’s not up yet and get told it could be 48 to 72 hours to fix it, I asked when can I d/l my files so I have a copy of them? I’m told that the request I made on Sat was not done by anyone and it would be 3 business days before they could get me a copy of the files, but if I really want them to get the files from backup it will mess them up on fixing the website. So basically I’m :xcensoredx: Until they decide to give me my files back! ](*,) Anybody got any idea’s on what the hell I do now? I’m so frigging mad right now I can’t even see straight. :onfire:
If you don’t have your own backup of the files, then I guess that all you can do is wait (and hassle them about fixing the problem ASAP). I don’t know how much you’re paying for the hosting service, but if it’s as cheap as some of the others mentioned on the forum, then perhaps there isn’t much you can complain about.
I have an FTP CRON job that goes out each night and just dumps my web page to my local HD for safe keeping! Already been burned by the cheap internet hosting service!
I’m not sure what the CRON job is, but can you tell me where to get it? I’d be very grateful for the information. :signthanks:
CRON is a Linux/Unix mechanism for scheduling jobs. If you’re running Windows then you would need to find an equivalent FTP scheduler, or FTP that allows scripting and then use Windows Scheduler to run the FTP script. Sorry…I don’t use either of these on Windows, but someone else will probably know of something to do this.
I use SyncBack which is a backup program that runs on a windows PC. It can do regular disk copy back up and also use ftp to backup a website to the local disk (or backup local files to a webserver). There’s even a free version
SyncBack only writes to CD or DVD? It won’t write to another drive on the PC?
No, syncback writes to/from hard disk, usb, floppy, network drive, and also by ftp - which IME isn’t common with most (free/cheap) PC backup programs and makes it interesting for website backup.
Sorry to hear about your problems with godaddy, but that is a common issue and complaint with godaddy as well as almost all free or low cost hosts. You get what you pay for.
Unfortuantely, unless if they ever come back online you’re screwed as far as getting your files back. A hard lesson to learn to keep your own backups. If you get access to your files again, I’d suggest downloading them as QUICKLY as possible then move out to another host.
A tip as far as finding a reliable host if you’re looking for hosting in the USA, figure 1 GB of bandwidth costs the host ~0.75 per GB… So if you see hosting for 10GB for less than ~10, there is no way the host can pay their bandwidth bill… Not to mention hardware, support, management, etc costs…
Check out Web Hosting Talk for reviews and such on webhosting. Very informative site.
I’ve been hosted by www.pair.com for over 10 years and in that time there has been one interruption of 4 hours (pre-announced) when they were moving to larger premises. They have seamlessly changed my site on at least half-a-dozen servers while upgrading in that time. They offer all the bells and whistles at a very reasonable cost.
Most hosting companies know that most customers never get anywhere near their bandwidth allowance. For example, I have a quota of 4TB/month but I’ve only been using 2-300GB/month. So they oversell their capacity making it seem like you’re getting something for nothing. They will get some customers who do use all or most of the capacity, but 1 user at 100% usage and 99 users at 10% usage is not much above 10% usage on average! In reality most users won’t want to get much past 80% usage because they can’t handle spikes in usage. So the customers with bigger requirements go to bigger plans or other hosting companies.
Ok, the site is back up! But now the ftp doesn’t seem to work. first thing I’m doing is a back up of the files on there server.
The site doesn’t want to take the FTP. here is the error I get.

Any Idea’s anyone? #-o
Have you tried to connect using a standard FTP client like Cute_FTP or CoreFTP to see if any FTP connections gets through…
-Bob
I can connect using fire ftp without a problem.
it looks like a firewall issue to me blocking wd’s ftp program
Everytime we have seen that error there is an issue with local Firewall or Anti-virus software however I find that odd as everything was working until GoDaddy caused you issues…
Any chance your IP address for your web site changed?
-Bob
Maybe his site is now on a different server/ip, which might require a different rule/exception in the firewall? Just an idea that went throguh my head as I read this!
They changed me from a Windows server to a Linux server.
IMHO, not exactly correct. There are certain providers who can provide rock solid service for about 4.5 cents/gig/month bandwidth as long as you don’t need more than 100meg of disk space (my whole site uses about 10meg). Linux servers, php, .htaccess support, etc. However, you must bring your own domain. Info: FWIW.
