I have been setting up my weather station on the internet and have now got WD sorted and am thinking about taking up WDL. I have up to now used the webspace I can use with my ISP but am now looking at web hosting to host the weather site. What I need to know is how much bandwidth to go for. How many GB a month. Does anyone know how much GB a month of traffic would be generated at say 10 minute uploads on WD + WDL? I don’t want to go to a host and find I have not allowed enough bandwith…
Many thanks for that. Gives me an idea what to go for now…
Derrylynne,
WD and WDL, in themselves, use little bandwidth. The total bandwidth used will depend on the information you put on your web site and the number of visitors that your site attracts. Should you include, say, web-cam images or other photographs then expect your bandwidth usage to increase accordingly.
As others have already mentioned, your ISP will include your uploads to your site but (assuming that you use a separate host for your weather site) will not include the viewing of your site by others. I run a very basic weather site which is hosted by someone other than my ISP. The information relative to that site is shown in the image below. Keep in mind though that all uploaded information is effectively registered twice - once for the upload via your ISP and once for the host receiving that information.
In my case WDL uploads its information about every 34 seconds or so. I have set Weather Display to upload information at various time intervals, some every ten minutes, some every fifteen minutes and so on. As you can see it doesn’t eat up much of my allocation.
As far as my ISP set up is concerned it makes little difference. I have around 12 gigabytes of up/down loads available to me and, even having to download updates for various programs after a ‘crash’, have only made the 1.5 gigabyte level once.
I hope that all that makes sense.
Cheers,
Not all hosts count upload in the bandwidth allowance, www.e-rice.net doesn’t, and they have very inexpensive hosting plans suitable for hobby websites
I use “netmeter” and prior to using little apart from WD (and often many updates of WD  ) WDL and MML it was showing a total of 1.1 - 1.7 upload + download per month.
My webhost is separate from my ISP and the webstuff doesn’t seem to bother them.
I have an 8GB package with my ISP and even with downloading several videos lately, I have never exceeded 5GB; normally about 1.9 GB.
anyone know of a program that will count up totals for an offpeak period and an peak period?
Peak 08:00 - 22:00, offpeak the rest.
My offpeak is fine, but 3 months in a row now, i have gone over my peak limit
Webserver is unlimited in transfer, its just my broadband connection i need to sort myself out on. Already limited some update frequencies.
Ah, I must have missed that somewhere along the line, nico. As I use e-rice as my host it points up my ignorance. Thanks for the detail.
makes mental note to not post before doing proper research
