Forum changes

There’s nothing worse than a web site administrator with too much time on their hands. They start fiddling and changing things. You’ll be sorry to hear that I now have far too much time on my hands (between retiring and social distancing for Covid-19) so I’m starting to change things  #-o

First thing you might notice is that some boards that aren’t really any use these days have been removed from view. I’m considering options for maybe another new board or two and maybe even merging some boards. This should make the forum a bit simpler to navigate.

I also want to try to tidy up the WD FAQs section. I suspect there may be some FAQs that are no longer relevant and also some FAQs/HOWTOs that are in other boards, e.g. WD for Linux has a number of stickied HOWTOs. So I’ll be removing any obviously out of date FAQs/HOWTOs and also moving some messages around. I’ll leave links for a while to anything I move though so if you’re used to finding it in the ‘old place’ then you’ll find a link to the ‘new place’.

If anyone has any suggestions of improvements that could be made, please feel free to comment.

First thing that comes to mind is that the Announcements board is sub-titled “Weather-Watch site and Weather Display software announcements”, but I never see WD software announcements there: they seem to come out in Chatter.

Thanks. Fixed it.

News items (top right of home page) are a bit dated. . .

Good point. I’ve removed all the news for now. I’ll add some when there is something newsworthy to report.

I also need to remove the WML version from the header. That’s a script change so not something I can do from bed at 00:32.

Not really relevant to this list of things but I would like to mention that Chris has become a wizard! I recently tried to send a post and it failed three times, thus blocking me from further tries. Within hours of my asking Chris for help, he had diagnosed the problem which was due to a specific word and a specific punctuation mark together. I changed the punctuation and lo and behold, no further problem. That must have been a tricky one to diagnose and I can only say a big bravo!

I’ve only just become a wizard??? It wasn’t as difficult to solve as you might think. I have access to log files and the firewall rules so once I had the message text you were trying to post it was fairly easy to see why it wasn’t being accepted.

Latest WML version has been removed from the forum header.

I’m also reorganising the FAQs section to make it a little easier to find things. If any of you are sitting at home ‘social distancing’ yourselves and looking for things to do, the previous FAQs (in the WD FAQs) board need to be checked/tested. If they’re still good then I’ll move them to the new FAQs sections. If they’re no longer relevant or need editing then I will deal with/edit them if told about it.

This one was recently rewritten, and should be OK.

Thank you. Now moved.

I’m also having fun writing a few new Raspberry Pi FAQs. I don’t know how many people use the Pi for WD but maybe the FAQs will encourage a few more people to try.

Latest WD version has disappeared too - I think that happened at migration this morning?

I noticed that too. I forgot the script that generates the info lives in a part of the server I’ve not migrated yet

Chris

Thanks for all the hard work!

Cheers

That took far longer to fix than I expected. I found a minor but significant difference between the version of PHP on the old and new servers that stopped the value displaying once I’d put the script in place.

Well done

Just a warning that forum generated email might be a bit intermittent. It’s taking a little while for the changes for the new server to become active.

I think emails from the forum should be flowing again.

Chris I noticed this morning that the Latest Version for WD just says ‘b’, so it looks like its gone again.

Stuart

Ignore me it just re-appeared when I went to the main page and now its back on all of them!!! Magic or what!

It’s possible that the script couldn’t read from weather-display.com on one run. I didn’t really error trap it to handle that condition.

Edit: Now error trapped

No News is good news
