I’m at the point where I’d like to begin to customize my site with a logo and other touches to make it unique. I’m thinking about purchasing a graphics program like Xara Extreme. Do most graphics packages also create favicons?
Most graphics programs cannot make favicons. It would be like using the space shuttle to go across the street.
If you want to make a favicon, there are many ways to do it very quickly and easily…
Tom, thanks for the information!
Also a nifty online (free) favicon maker at
No fuss or muss, just select a gif/jpg/png/bmp, and it will create one, then allow you to download to your site.
Don’t forget to include:
in the section of your page to make sure it’s used by browsers.
Best regards,

Great link. Thanks Ken.
I love the things you learn on this forum!!!
Just had some spare time to experiment with this and was able to create an icon (very crude I know ) using MS Paint and Ken’s suggested Dynamic Drive- FavIcon Generator web page. I don’t see it show up in IE but it works for me in FireFox.
Many thanks again to Tom and Ken for your help.
Bill
Nice one I can see it on IE7.
IE6, which I think created this feature… is notoriously crappy at using it.
Whats wierd with my favicon is that I can see it on FireFox but not IE7. I have deleted the favorite, cleared the cache, go to the site again and no Favicon. Does anyone have the secret to making it appear?
Favicons have been around well before IE5.
Most of the time, with modern browsers you can get away with just naming the icon “favicon.ico” and having it in your document root. Works fine on my site, but I did eventually add the tag into the of my page. IE is VERY inconsistent with using this feature and I’ve noticed that Opera and FF are a lot more consistent with it.
Like others, I had the disapearing Favicon on my site using IE6 but since I’ve used IE7 then it seems to be fine.
I’ve always used the Favicon coding in the Header of each page and mine was also generated using Dynamic Drive’s maker.
