Can anyone help me understand how to edit xml files in Notepad++. I was sure I could once but now I get IE wanting to open everytime I try and even though I have the xml plugin for notepad++ it does not open the file. I am trying to edit my menu file to add another page showing NZ Weather Map data.

Have you tried right-clicking on the xml file and selecting “Edit with Notepad++”.
Or right-click on the file and select “properties” and change the “opens with” program to Notepad++ so it will do that ok when double clicking on the file. This is ok for me in Win 7 - not sure about 8.1 and 10.

Martyn, Thanks for reply but I have already done those. For me in Win 10 right click only gives me ability to change file permissions(attributes) and there is no open with option. View/edit just automatically opens IE. I have been trying to see if there is a setting in IE but wondered if this is a Win10 thing.
That’s very strange, I see the basically the same right click menu in w10 File Explorer as in w7, and there’s nothing about “file permissions(attributes)” :?
Then i would try opening notepad and choose open, view all files and extensions and open the xml
Are you refering to the file on the web-server?
Or to a local copy on your windows disk?
A screenshot would probably help to find out why your setup is totally different from all others here on the forum.

Sorry for my delay in following this up. In Windows 10 I went to Settings/ System/ Default Apps/ Choose default apps by file type and changed .xml from Office XML handler to Notepad ++ and I can edit from within Filezilla. My understanding oif all this is being stretched and it appears that Windows 10 changes some file associations to suit itself rather than what you had before. I have also had trouble with various folders being made inaccessible for which I have had to go and retake ownership of them so I can see them again. Quite disconcerting so far but I think I have sorted it all. Thanks for all replies.
