Davis Vantage Pro - Broken or Calibration issue?

Hi,
Our school website has been offline for over a year because of one thing or another including work at the school - and it being safer to take it down, and an issue with the temperature reading was causing problems! We are now in the process of trying to start all over! I have cleaned and given a quick wipe down to the VP2 - but an issue that was there before is still there. The Outside temperature reads -38 C while the chill is -40C. The davis manual mentions that a lower than expected reading should be calibarated - but how? I did contact Davis and though I asked some advice - they replied with - Hi the part number you need is 7346.166! I didn’t tell them my exact model number - so I am unsure if that advice is totally accurate. Anyway - is there a way to calibrate the Davis VP2? If not - is the part number ok for a 2006 VP2? And lastly - where do I buy this part - hopefully it is not too expensive! Thanks very much - the children are very excited to get our school website back up and running - so hopefully somebody can give me some advice.

Let’s be clear, the outdoor temp is reading minus 38 Celcius? If so then the temp sensor has failed and needs to be replaced, the calibration is only intended to fine tune the temp a few degrees.

Yes that is correct - the outside temp is reading -38C. Thanks for your reply. So I guess could anybody confirm that 7346.166 is the correct part number (I see that there are a few different model number for temp sensors). It was bought december 2006

Also a UK supplier would be good. Hope this isn’t an expensive part!!!

I don’t know if a UK distributor would have the part, you may have to go direct to McMurdo the UK importer. I suggest you PM our member prodata - he has the right connections in the UK.

So do I and I’ve had this issue Niko.

If you contact McMurdo Customer Service and tell them what the problem is, they will send you a new temp/hum sensor. I got mine free of charge and I wasn’t even asked the age of the VP2.

I will try this now. Thank you. I have also sent a message prodata.

Can I just add an update/clarification to this thread in case anyone else has the same problem:

If you have a VP2 made in 2004 or 2005 (Mfg Code on the ISS or console label usually starts A4 or A5) then you need the older analogue temp/hum sensor (7346.029), provided you’re still using the original ISS SIM board. The more recent .166type ‘digital’ temp/hum sensor WILL NOT WORK.

For VP2 systems made from 1st Jan 2006 on (not sure if anyone was actually working on New Year’s Day 2006 though!) then it is the digital type that is needed (though the analogue type will also work in fact). The part number of the original digital T/H board was indeed 7346.166 but that has now been superseded. What’s needed now is the 6930 Temperature/Humidity upgrade kit which contains, inter alia, the latest version of the .166-type board.

Whether McMurdo will provide this part free to UK customers beyond the normal 2-year warranty period is ultimately at their discretion and will I guess depend on when/whether Davis turn off the free supply tap on 6930 kits. So good luck if you can get one for free but please don’t be surprised if there’s a change of policy at some point soon, especially bearing in mind that the older .166 parts will now be approaching 4 years old.
