Data Backup - reload after reinstall

Hi all,

I’d like to be able to back up my weather data daily to a ftp server and import the same for those instances like my recent strike damage. Can someone advise of the simplest way to do so. I know Wdisplay can be configured to do so but right now, the ftp aspects of the program are posting only 0 byte files on the server. Hence, I was going to re-install in an effort to clear the problem.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Is it just the backup function not FTP’ing, or everything else?

I’ve had very good luck with the back-up function - with it FTP’ing to my site everyday.

If you need to do something manually, you could go into the backup screen, do a manual backup, the FTP it to your site manually…is that what you are talking about?

Hi Snowman and thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. All aspects of the Wdisplay FTP program are acting fluky. All of my webpages and associated files are arriving on my ftp site as 0 byte files. Also, the program initially post my wunderground data ok then stops posting my updates without any apparent reason at random times. All of the locally created files “look” fine down here but they aren’t making the trip across cyberspace.

I intended to wipe out wdisplay and start again to try and clear the FTP problem which brought me to the question about saving and restoring data. Recently I lost all my data after a lighting strike. To rebuild it, I’m opening a page for each day off of weatherunderground and saving the delimited file for everyday that I have posted there. (Since Nov of 2005). ARRRGH. Needless to say, I’m not the jolliest of fellows and def. don’t want to have to do this again.

When I am all done recreating my history, I intend to add the most recent data aquired and save it offsite. Then import it in to a fresh install. Going forward, I would like to save my weather history in a format ready to re-import should something go wrong. So basically the question is:

Is there a file or group of files which I can designate to be copied to a location off-site that I can readily re-import into wdisplay? I’m only concerned with the weather data. I know that the back-up function of wdisplay can copy config’s, data, and anything else but keep in mind, my program is fluky right now. So if I know the file name containing my weather data, I can grab my most recent, modify and append my recompiled history to match it, then be ready to import.

Thanks,
Steve

maybe you need to tick, use passive mode, in the connections setup?

Ok - I understand what you want to do now…

The following files are what you want to back up - these are the same that the back up function in WD backs up.

All logfiles (72006lg.txt etc.)
All datafiles (in data files folder)
wdisplayftp.reg (registry settings) - In the main screen, hit “action” then “back up registry settings now” - will make it most current
wdisplay.ini (configuration settings) - found in the main WD folder

Then with your new install, after importing all these files, you will want to double click on the wdisplay.ini file to activate those settings, then restart WD.

Also, here is a FAQ on the subject which might help some:

And, yet another option if you want to troubleshoot some, is to install a second copy of WD on your machine:

And, also…here is one about uninstalling WD:

Hope that helps.

Steve - Brian posted at the same time I did - maybe try his suggestions first before going through all that.

Thanks Brian,

I tried tick/detick on passive mode with no positive result. The only “thing” I can recall happening is that at one time I hit the “send file now” button and did not see the ftp icon in the system tray pop up (quick enough to suite my impatient should have waited a lil longer self) and clicked it again. Two FTP icons came up (well it did what I told it to do instead of what I wanted it to do right?) One went away, the other hung and refused to clear no matter what I did. (I even tried killing it with taskmanager and it ignored me. I think I even heard it snicker once #-o Ever since rebooting, nothing ftp related has been “behaving” completely right. I’ve ticked, unticked, tried and retried but no dice.

Thanks Snowman,

I’m away from my home 'puter so I cant fish for the files but I’m sure thats what I needed.

Just 1 more thing… since the FTP aspects of the program are hmmm, uhhhh “moody” right now, could I possibly “import” a problem by restoring anything other than the basic weather data? i.e. registry settings / datafiles.

My FTP “stuff” is clogged so I’m thinking complete enema while it sounds like your suggesting metamucil?
