Two questions…
Does WD calculate corn heat units?
If so, how do I display it on the main screen?
Thanks.

Ok I have to ask…
What is a “Corn Heat Unit” ?
Number of kernels popped per degree increase of temp? LOL

WD calculates Growing Degree Days, is that what you are looking for? Seems like it’s the same thing Heat Unit Concepts Related to Corn Development (Purdue University)
It’s similar but different…
See The Global Social Knowledge Network | TermWiki.com
EDIT: Actually, see http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/93-119.htm for a really good explanation, and detailed instructions on how to calculate.
If WD does not do this, is there any sort of add-in, etc. that would do it for me? What would it take to get it added to WD?
no, WD does not calculate that
I guess its possible WD could calculate that data
but how many people would find it usefull?
Corn Heat Units are closely watched by a lot of farmers in Canada and the US. I believe that as long as farmers were aware that the software tracked this, or that the figures were available on our weather websites, it would be widely utilized.
If I could, I’d like to request that this feature be added.
Thanks,
Id also add this feature onto my parents site cause they farm too.
how would you like to see this?
i.e as a custom tag?
I can add it , using this method:
A modification of growing degree-days (GDD) with both upper and lower temperature thresholds. All temperatures above 86
I guess I hardly know enough about how to use custom tags to know how to use it. But, if the information is there, I’m sure there will be some help to figure it out… Ideally, I would like to see this information both in my Weather Display application (desktop), and on my website.
Next thing… regarding the calculation: Perhaps I should have clarified that what I am most interested in is the cumulative corn heat units for the season. Is it possible to modify the calculation/add another tag to calculate this? The units would need to start accumulating after the 3-day season start threshold and end after the low hits -2C. A little more info below, copied from http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/93-119.htm.
"[color=blue][font=Verdana]The spring planting date (date to start accumulating CHU) is estimated as:
the last day of three consecutive days, with daily mean air temperatures equal to or greater than 12.8
OK, I think I could add that
I could add the data where GDD are now (i.e the av/ext reports)
Sounds great… I’ll look forward to seeing it!
Thanks for your help; it is certainly appreciated.
“Ears” to a great solution!!!
I will need some summmer time data to work with…(its winter time here)
so if someone could .zip and email me the data files
month72011.inf , month62011.inf, month52011.inf
thanks
I have added the code…but I do not have the data to test yet…but maybe someone else could test
(see if it shows under view,av/ext)
in the latest .zip update
The data has been sent. Sorry for the delay… been out of the office for a few days.
try the latest version of WD and see how that looks for the GDD corn value under view, av/ext
Brian,
I could use some custom tags for corn gdd if possible
