I continue to have what appears to be problems associated with connections on my 1-wire. I am using CAT5 and have permanently soldered and sealed most of my connections. The only remaining connections are those that I hesitate to permanently connect since I have needed to remove/reconnect them due to changes and testing.
I am currently using an RJ12 connector block (with 5 or 6 female plugs) to consolidate. It sounds like these may be getting corroded even though they are inside.
What does everyone find best for these types of connections?
I took out my RJ11 connectors because I had so many problems and now I use a phone punch down block outside and it has worked flawlessly. If you need to disconnect simply pull the wires out and punch them back in. 2 years without a problem.
just as a note jeff, i use dallas 1 wire sensors for my station temp and hum, and for indoor temp/hum,myself, and not flat lining…althoguh i have seen reports of the this associated with ham radio transmissions…
this is why i think its a hardware thing…and so its like chasing your tail trying to put a plaster on it software wise…
hope you understand
I’ll look into getting a punchdown block. That sounds like my next step of elimination! Thanks for the guidance. It didn’t know if they would work outside. I’ll try to arrange to have it inside so it’s not an issue.
Brian, I understand what you’re saying - no problem. I have worked to eliminate my hardware issues around the DS9097U replacement with ILink, the removal of the majority of my non-CAT5 wiring… and was hoping that I had removed all the questionable hardware items. I still have a consolidation with a number of sensors that collect in an RJ12 box and then through standard phone cable for about 4 feet to the ILink. I will replace with connection with a punchdown block and CAT5 for the 4 feet.
I agree that I don’t want a software “fix” to chase a hardware problem. If I am the only one with this problem - then it certainly seems like it is something with my particular setup. My setup has been simplified to the degree that I thought I had removed all hardware issues. Even with one sensor attached I was getting flatlining. I appreciate your help in trying to put the hourly resets in to help out. I think this functionality is useful - regardless of my problem. The changes seemed to aggravate my problems.
I’ll replace with the punchdown block and see what that does!
A while back, I posted a reply about techniques which made my 1-Wire system work. One of the BIG improvements was that I used Scotchlok UR Connectors (gel-filled) to connect instruments to CAT5E cable.
