Connect a Vaisala station under LoraWan?

Good morning
Is it possible to connect a Vaisala station under LoraWan? If so? Do you have any information?
Thank you
Serge

Bonjour,
Est-il possible de connecter sous LoraWan une station Vaisala ? Si oui ? Avez-vous des informations.
Merci
Serge

Hi Serge

I’m not an expert and haven’t done what you want to do but having looked a little at LoraWan in the past I can offer some thoughts. Firstly, I assume you want to use LoraWan to put the station sensors some distance from your PC? LoraWan is good at that if you’re trying to get a couple of km away in an urban environment or a little further in the countryside (assuming no big mountains or forests in the way).

I think the Vaisala station has RS232/RS485 connections available and you can buy RS232/485 to LoraWan gateways. Put one at each end and then you effectively have a very long RS232/485 cable between the ends. However, the gateways I’ve seen look to be quite expensive ranging from £200-800 each (and multiply by two for your requirement!) There are microcontrollers with LoraWan built in, e.g. there’s an ESP32 board with LoraWan on it, and there are LoraWan cards to use with other microcontrollers, but you’d need to build and program those yourself (unless someone else has already done it).

However, I think the main thing that might be an issue for you is that LoraWan places strict duty cycles on transmit times. So if you transmit for 100ms (enough for maybe 50 bytes at the maximum LoraWan speeds) then you cannot transmit again for approximately 10 seconds. I don’t know how often your station sends data but if like most stations it’s every second or two then you might find there’s less data throughput than you need to get the data across. You can have longer transmit times, but you’re still limited to a maximum transmit duty cycle in a day of 1%. So you could transmit more data in 500ms (250bytes) but then you must not transmit again for over 50 seconds.

Sorry not to give you an answer, but I hope this helps a little.

Thank you for these additional information very useful and this adds to my investigations.
I have as an example this VP2 and I think it is possible remains to be cogitated.

If you have any additional information at any time, I am ok…
Thank you.
Serge

Merci pour ces compléments d’informations très utiles et cela s’ajoute à mes investigations.
J’ai comme exemple cette VP2 et je pense que cela est possible reste à cogiter.

Si vous avez des renseignements complémentaires à tout moment, je suis preneur.
Merci.
Serge

That’s interesting. If it can be done for a VP2 then I don’t see why it shouldn’t for other stations. I hope you can find something to do it.
