Hi All,
Could anyone tell me how the cloudbase is determined, at the moment my station is showing the cloudbase at 2500ft after checking the Stanstead and Wattisham airport Metars there cloudbases are at minimum 10 times what mine are, is there anything that I have to set up,
Thanks
Geoff
Morning Geoff,
The Cloudbase figure given in WD is a calculation, based on your current conditions, of the height at which cloud would form at.
It’s not the actual height of the clouds in your area, that would take some fancy & expensive equipment to produce automatically.
I find that up here it’s actually quite accurate most of the time, mainly with cloud heights below around 5000ft.
Many thanks all, I understand now, was just a bit worried that I had not set something up.
or an easier calculation is in Celcius…temp - dewpoint X 4 = height of cloud above ground level in feet. This is only valid for cumuloform clouds ie. cf cu tcu cb
