Clientraw upload failing

Any possibility that this is a server related problem, maybe your host doesn’t like you hitting ftp so often?

My PC version seems not to have any problem ftping the clientraw files to my host, but it does seem strange I’m the only person with the problem.

I’ll change the settings to slow the clientraw files to once every 5 minutes from once a minute. That would be an easy fix if it works.

Worth a try, it is a pretty unique issue. Another idea would be to test to a different server.

Result 227 Entering Passive Mode (72,167,232,152,197,174)

thats a clue there
try not setting to use passive mode

Worth trying but it looks like that message is after it has failed, the prior transfer in the log doesn’t appear to have any problem with passive.

I tried to change the upload times to a five minute interval in Control Panel → Internet File Creation and Upload → Setup page #2 → File #28. I made sure the upload every minute box was not checked, and have both the file creation and upload set to 5 minutes. I clicked the save button and then the green check button, and selected Save and Exit and shutdown WD. I restarted WD and the file uploads are still going out about every minute.

The file upload only fails after the clientraw file on my iMac stops being created / updated. Once that happens, the uploads start failing.

I saw the message about passive ftp in the logs too, but all the successful uploads didn’t seem have a problem.

you should though be using the real time ftp setup in the webfiles/web page setup

when the upload fails
try deleting the clientraw files on your pc
to get them unlocked
as a test

Are you saying I should use file #28 to create the clientraw files and real time ftp to upload them?
I also turned off passive ftp and the uplads worked fine:

Client raw FTP Upload 07:17:54 27-5-09

The clientraw files are being created fine, it’s just the upload that’s failing for some reason. The time stamps on the clientraw were showing

-rw-r–r-- 1 diefelr admin 734 May 27 08:31 clientraw.txt
-rw-r–r-- 1 diefelr admin 2023 May 27 07:23 clientrawdaily.txt
-rw-r–r-- 1 diefelr admin 2925 May 27 08:30 clientrawextra.txt
-rw-r–r-- 1 diefelr admin 2288 May 27 07:59 clientrawhour.txt

The upload had already failed 17 minutes prior to the last time stamp on the clientraw files.

I moved the directory for the clientraw files from /Library/Application\ Support/wdisplay/webfiles to /Applications/wdisplay and that made no difference either.

Are you saying I should use file #28 to create the clientraw files and real time ftp to upload them?

you should not be using #28 at all
you just need to turn the switch on in the real time ftp setup in the webfiles/web page setup

I do not have problems here myself with the ftp no longer uploading the clientraw files after time
i use filerename on the server…if your server supports that, try that option

I wiped the drive on my iMac, reinstalled Leopard, installed all the required updates, installed the IOUSBFamily.kext 3.2.7
package, created a new user on the system, and installed the latest version of WD for the Intel Mac.

The clientraw.txt file fails to upload to my website after about 40 minutes. My system is freshly installed and has no extra software installed dother then required updates and the IOUSBFamily.kext 3.2.7 files. I am running in stationless mode because I don’t want to disconnect my WMR100 from the PC version of WD until I’m sure the Mac version is working.

My clientraw file are being uploaded every 30 seconds or so and I can’t find where I can slow the rate of uploads. I don’t think the problem is with my particular Mac since it’s a freshly reloaded system. I don’t think it has anything to do with my user on the mac, since I created a new user and did not use any of my previous users preferences or files for the new user.

could be something about your ftp server
I have had the latest version running for nearly 3 days non stop here
and the clientraw files are still uploading OK:

That’s a possibility I suppose, but I think once when the upload was failing, I tried a manual ftp to the site and it worked fine. I’ll wait for it to fail again and see if I can do a manual ftp of the file.

Is there someway to slow down the speed of the clientraw.txt uploads?

I changed the time between uploads from 25 seconds to 60 seconds.

[color=red]The clientraw.txt file is no longer being updated.

As soon as the upload fails, I’ll try a manual ftp to my site. If it’s my website causing the problem I would think the PC version of WD would also be having the problem.
I can manually upload files to me website after the clientraw.txt file stops being uploaded.

The clientraw.txt upload fails and the clientraw.txt file stops being created, so there are two problems. Removing the clientraw.txt file does not have any effect

When the clientraw.txt file problem happens, I can not Exit or Save and Exit WD. WD will just hang and never quit unless I do a force quit.

In the Real Time control panel, there is a setting “delay between uploading data”

What does yours say?

Windy and Niko, if you remember I had this almost exact same issue in January when I subscribed to “Host papa” hosting, and Niko let me do tests on his server. It ended up that the host was not letting me upload so often and the cronftp was holding the connection open until it was crashing locally… only the host logs showed the issue. The uploads worked perfectly on Niko’s server.

Turned out Hostpapa could not allow my setup and I ended up discontiuing the service. Although I switched to PC and they allowed the connections, they were booting my Mac ftp.

Since there are no other users experiencing this issue, this sounds very similar to my experience way back when. My .02 cents

its not 2 problems, all related problems

the problem with ftp server then causes a problem with the cronftpreal, which then causes a problem with WD itself trying to update the clientraw file

I will though add some code to handle more gracefully problems with the ftp upload, so at least there is no down stream problems with WD trying to update the locked out file

Looks like the site is hosted by godaddy. I may be wrong but it seems to me that we’ve had several instances of mysterious ftp problems with godaddy users recently.

Yes it’s a GoDaddy hosted site. I may setup with another host and see what happens

if you could set me an account maybe on your godaddy server (email me your settings), then I could run a test here?

well , while trying to setup dafuser’s ftp settings
I realised that (because I must have entered his settings wrong)
if the ftp login fails, the ftp upload still tries to occur
that might be the cause of the problem

so, use this new update
http://www.weather-display.com/downloadfiles/cronftpreal.gz
i.e unzip to
/Applications/wdisplay/
I will make that same change with the linux version, as there is a user there with similar issues

update: looks to be a fix, running a test here, using dafuser’s ftp settings
still uloading ok after 1 hour, and the clientraw file is still being updated localy OK too on the HD

update: after 3 hours still no problems
I stopped the test at that point…as the fan on the Mac mini goes full bore (after it stopped altogether the other day and now needs that special power down trick to get it going every time) and is rather annoying

the latest mac download install now has this new cronftpreal (but if using the , use these ftp settings instead, in the real time ftp setup, then use the version from the link in this post until the next mac full install update)

I setup another site with a Yahoo small business a the hosting site and still had the same problem. So it’s not my GoDaddy host that’s causing the problem.
It looks like Brian has found the problem. I’ll install the new cronftpfullreal and give it another shot. Thanks Brian

Brian, on the issue of your fans, note that there are TWO sets of istructions for resetting your PMU/SMU depending on whether you have an PPC mini or an Intel Mini. The instructions earlier in this thread refer to the PPC mini and that may be the reason for your recurring issue.

Go here to read about it, and also for the SMU (for intel mini) reset:

After the reset, go here for tips on air circulation for the mini (I do this and it is very effective on both Minis, increasing ventillation under the unit) and also for fan speed control software, but use with care. The blog covers the macbook but the same issue of ventilation applies to the Mini.

Hope this helps with that issue.
Jim

Note that the power button should NOT be pressed for the intel Mini when you plug back into the wall. Also all peripherals should be disconnected or you will not get a clean reset.
