Clickable USA Map

Thats cool Dan!

What version of Windows Media player do you guys have??
that message appears to be a windows media player codecs message?
not certain why but maybe it has to do with which media player is installed on ones pc.
im not even certain why its needed for that website?
the day i understand windows and things it does is the day i hang myself!!

Good work guys figuring out what caused the pop-up. I have been meaning to remove that from the main page as it crashes FF on my Linux box at work when it loads Kaffine viewer. When I get a chance I will remove it from the main page and put it someplace else so your browsers aren’t forced to deal with it unless you want the streaming video.

Looking good  You’ve got your work cut out creating the hundreds of pages that are mapped to though 8O

Yep, not a simple project, but one that I have been wanting to do for awhile. Should make it very easy to locate stations when severe weather hits anywhere in the world. And I don’t think every country/state will require a sub-map. For instance, I added Malta today, if there is only one WD station in Malta then I can just link to it from the world map and skip the submap. That will save me a little work. Sure is a fun project, interesting to see where all the stations are around the world.

I need some suggestions for a problem. I just added Malta and discovered that on the world map Malta is a very small hotspot. If you don’t know where Malta is, finding it on the map is going to be near impossible.

I was thinking of adding text below the map with hotlinks to the small countries that are not visable on the map. If someone has another idea I would welcome the input. If possible I would like to keep the number of maps to a minimum…I don’t know that everyone will want to drill down thru numerious layers/maps to find the station or country they are looking for…and file size needs to be a consideration for those who don’t have high speed connections…

Dan,

What if you added text links to those countries with a WD user linked to them? If no WD user and then just omit that Country in the text links… That would also help to showcase the countries WD users are in?

Not sure that the list won’t get really long at some point but most maps of this nature I have seen have included country links…

The current world map works great for the countries you can ‘see’, it’s just the small ones that are difficult. I was thinking of just adding a link under the map, that would say just Malta as a hotlink. Another example I was thinking about, I could include the island of Malta in the hotspot for Italy. Then the sub-map would come showing both Italy and Malta. Of course this would require the visitor to know where Malta was in the first place or how would they know it was near Italy. Thats what made me think of just adding a hotlink under the map for the small locations. I will put a link on the world map page for Malta, so I can show you what I mean…

Drilling down through lots of levels of zoom wouldn’t be good, but if you had the world broken up into continents (NA, SA, Europe, etc) then most countries should be visible once you got to continent level.

So using the continent maps from the world map to attain a better zoom detail sounds like a good idea. I will have to see what maps I can on the internet and do a test.

Added a text link for Malta, let me know what you think of that idea…it’s a lot easier than adding more maps

Changed to a different USA map, let me know what you think…http://weather.dcrooks.net/mapedit/usa.html

I have to admit I like the Malta Map better than either of the US maps LOL

I would think that Chris’s solution would add another click for some areas that really wouldn’t need the additional click… The text link idea is good but if you only list the small places it may be someone would access the page and see the links and might think that was all that was available… :dontknow:

Maybe enhancing the text at the top of the page which now reads “Feel free to mouse over the map and click on individual countries.” to something like.

“Feel free to mouse over the map and click on individual countries. Additional country links are also available from the bottom of this page.” or something along this line?

Ok, added the text to explain the links.

That solution seems best to me and easily understood…

Good deal Dan,
Bob

Moved the text down, same idea though…

Need more stations to add…especially the non-USA stations. As I get URL’s I will add the sub-maps for those countries. If you have a nice map (gif) of your country that would look good please let me know…it will make my job a lot easier.

I suspect there are plenty of places from the world map that would benefit from an extra level of zoom. Central America, Caribbean, Europe, west coast of Africa to name a few! Even some countries that you wouldn’t say were small take a bit of accuracy to hover over and click accurately. To get to state level in the US you really need to add a level of zoom from a world map…apart from Texas which everyone knows is the biggest country in the universe

Added New Zealand to the world map…

Nice Maps…

Feel Free to add my location…
