Change from Keyspan USB Serial Adapter US-19HS to Digi Edgeport 1 Adapter?

Since I have had to move all my WD software, files, and to a new computer due to a unbootable PC, I have had 6 Blue Screens of Death from 6 Sept to this morning, and number lockups of WD due to unknown reasons. Using a dump editor, the best I can discover is that these are caused by the Keyspan USB Adapter US-19HS. Maybe I should have installed the Keyspan drivers for the serial-USB converter, but for about 2 weeks after I got the new computer, all seemed fairly ok (no BSOD). The driver installed automatically by Windows 7 was an FTDI one with a date of 3-18-11, version 2.8.14.0 for USB Serial Port COM3 (which is what I have WD set for).

I now have an Edgeport/1 USB Converter which I have not installed neither the device nor the SW drivers. I’m not sure what to do next. After the BSOD this morning, I had a WD lockup at 10:08am but all is working well at this moment, 1:21pm (tho another problem is probably emminent, the past weeks are any indication).

Should I change to the new, and more expensive Edgeport/1 or install the Windows 7 Keyspan Windows 7 drivers first. Either way, I don’t want to lose the running of WD or the updates to my web site (太阳集团tyc539(中国)有限公司). But I get tired of the BSOD and the frequent WD lockups (cannot bring up WD at all, and have to do a PC restart).

My Weather station is a David Vantage Pro2 which I purchase on May 1st, 2008.

Any advice or suggestions from anyone’s experience or knowledge? Would sure appreciate it.

Attached here and in the next post are some 2 screen copies of details of the recent dmp file (Dump Info 1 and Dump Info 2), and the 3 screen copies of Windows Problem Details (Details 1, Details 2, and Details 3) on that BSOD. This is due to the limit of 128K per post.

Here are the other two files mentioned in my last post.

I don’t think I would rely on Windows to find/use the best driver. If it were me I would use the driver supplied with the device. W7 should tell you if the driver is not complaint with W7.

I found the following zip file on the Keyspan site (Keyspan Driver for USA-19HS_v4b (Beta) (Windows 7)). Is this the one I should try first? I believe the procedure would be to uninstall the FTDI driver on COM3 (under device manager, Ports), then run the install of the Keyspan driver. Right?

Dan, I guess the Windows 7 driver install from the Keyspan web site is the best way to go. I would think if this didn’t work, I could always un-install that driver, and let Windows chose the same FTDI driver again? If all this doesn’t work, I could always try the new Edgeport/1 USB-Serial Converter I just bought. Possibly, I may be able to return the Edgeport if the new Windows 7 driver for the Keyspan works out. Just don’t want to lose my web site updates.

Does anyone have any experience with the two converters, Keyspan USA19HS and Digi Edgeport/1? The Edgeport certainly is much more expensive, but that doesn’t always mean better.

Well, after 33 hours with no BSOD or lockups, I got a BSOD. So I “tried” to install the latest Windows driver for the Keyspan USB-Serial adapter. Never could get it to take. Followed the instructions in the Keyspan instructions PDF file, but it didn’t work. I uninstalled the current FTDI driver then installed the Keyspan one, and that didn’t work either - the installation of the driver didn’t even appear as a COM port in the Device Manager.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but something. Anyone have any ideas?

Still haven’t tried the Digi Edgeport USB-Serial adapter yet. Thought I would keep trying with the Keyspan, since I read a lot of good reviews on it.

Folks seem to have the best luck with serial-USB adapters that utilize the Prolific serial-USB device.
I don’t know if the Keyspan or the Digi Edgeport devices use that device. I had no luck with any other
type device, and since going with a Prolific-based device, I have not had single problem.

I had an issue with the Keyspan USB converter. After the installation my computer would reboot at least once a day. I did some troubleshooting and figured out it was the keyspan drivers. I uninstalled the drivers and purchased the iogear GUC232A USB converter and installed it’s drivers. My computer has been running great since. I’m running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. I know now that I probably could have just changed drivers, but I couldn’t find any others at the time so I just bought a new adapter.

Thanks, jpmorgan49 and KeithW for your comments. These are helpful. The next time I get a BSOD or lockup, I intend to following one of your suggestions.
