Basic Questions

Set up a WD web page using the standard template - managed to delete the data I don’t want http://www.kahurangi.org/ but I now want to reverse this into a slightly more ambitious page. Everytime I try to edit the ‘Index’ or ‘datahtm.txt’ files using Frontpage or Word it seems to lock me out ? Are these pages barred (I have ticked all the appropriate ‘management’ boxes in setup)?

Some of my data is not displaying - 24/48 hr graphs, daily low temp/wind gust times - any quick thoughts (again my creation/upload setup is all green  )

Cheers

I must admit that I dont use the standard pages these days but I would suggest not using Frontpage to edit these files. This software has some quirks I dont like and if I remember correctly it adds a whole bunch of stuff which is not needed, as this might upset WD. Use a text editor for these WD files. If you want to have more customised pages have a look at the FAQ section and see how this can be achieved using ‘Internet File Creation & Uploads’ control panel. You can also take a look at the Carterlake templates which I know a lot of folks here use.

Personally I hand craft all my pages and use the data from WD in the clientraw files (which are for WDL) to provide all the data. This allows me to have a single ‘look & feel’ for all my pages weather and non-weather.

I am sure you right, but given minimal knowledge of html code I need a simple start point. Something is basically wrong as Word acts as a txt editor as needed and that doesn’t want to save the files (I save them but they revert to original).

I tried using the WD html editor but it wouldn’t load the basic WD files either??

Peter

the build in wysiwug editor you have to start from scratch with that, it does not work with loaded html files unfortunatly

Have you tried Notepad to edit your datahtm.txt files? That has always worked for me.

Peter,

Just to echo what others have already said, don’t use FrontPage to edit any WD files and I also wouldn’t recommend Word. Notepad would be your best option.

Also if you want to get back to the default WD HTML files you can download a full WD download and install it to a different location then you currently have WD running then copy the datahtm.txt files from the new install to the old and then delete the new install, that should give you a completely fresh start with the default WD HTML file.

Well, here comes the renegade again…I have used Frontpage extensively with good (not great) success for quite a while. Before I retired my IT department embarked on a project to keep pertinent systems procedures on our intranet using FP so I became pretty familiar with it. Then I started building my personal site and when WD came along and I just kept on using it. This is not by any means an endorsement for FP because much more intelligent and capable heads than mine have much better skill sets and results than mine with building and maintaining web sites. It is, however, a place to start and experiment with some of the new things you need to know. Just my 2 cents worth.

To clarify,

I do not recommend using FrontPage with WD specific files like datahtm.txt files. There would be no reason not to use it for custom files as far as I am aware.

Linda your WD created file, http://www.luvretirement.com/WeatherDisplay.htm, does not show any evidence that FrontPage was used in modifying it and that was what i was referring to…

Not the table just the page background 'cause it was easy but if you want to see a real horror story use the link below the sunrise/sunset and take a look at my “phantom” page (Click here for a daily update of the averages/extremes to date for the month). LOL, I’m still trying to figure that one out. For the originator of this thread that’s an example of what NOT to do with Frontpage. I made the mess so I’ll eventually clean it up…

My problem with Frontpage is that I have seen so many pages created with it which use IE only code that they often dont work in other browsers, or you have problems getting it through W3C verification. I find HTML easy as I was very familiar with GML which is almost identical in many ways, so I always code by hand. I know many people are not comfortable with that and there are better packages out there which created good W3C verifiable HTML. There are also packages which help you through using HTML raw and these also allow you to understand what is happening in a browser.

Just my 10 cents…

Stuart

What do you mean it “locks you out”. Could you let us know exactly what the error message is?

those graphs, 24/48 etc, are only updated once a day, at the averages/extremes update (e.g midnight or 9am)
(as long as wd is running then and you have set to ceate and upload the daily averages/extremes in the upload times)
better yet though to use the customise internet and file creation setup and then set times to create and upload the files needed and set the current 12/24/48/72 hour graphs
and then add a .html link to those graphs to say the datahtm3.txt file in the webfiles folder

for customisation of a html page, try the carterlake package

for anyone that does not know, kahurangi is a maori word for a colour blue

Darn…you found my secret code. LOL

Thanks all - looks like there is no ‘easy’ route I will just have to learn HTML.

Phil - it appears to to save the files (but they revert to original which has me ??).

Brian - we are surrounded by the Kahurangi Nat Park on two sides (and the Abel Tasman Nat Park on a third) you are right ref Kahurangi meaning blue but it is also used for (blue) sky.

there are lots of very knowledgeable html expers here on the forum who can help
the “carter lake template” is a good place to start

maybe the mountains look blue from a distance?

long time since I have been to Golden Bay (when I walked the beatiful Heaphy track  )

I’m wondering whether it saves them in a different location. Word typically saves in its default directory, for example. Check exactly where it’s putting it if you does Save As.

Peter,

Also under webfiles from Control Panel there are some tick boxes for letting you manage datahtm files, make sure those are ticked as well…

Currently undergoing a nervous breakdown - not sure whether it is Frontpage or WD (or the WD help manual) that have caused it - therapy will be leaning html and deconstructing WD - I will be in touch in about 28 days if I survive
