Atmospheric river hits California

It’s categorized as an AR3 (of 5) and it packs a punch.

We’ve has 2.5in (63.5mm) in the last 24hrs. It’s not over yet.

Is that the Pineapple Express, or is it starting further south?

Yes, the long tail of the atmospheric river does start below Hawaii, so it qualifies as a “Pineapple Express”. Western NWS and broadcast meteorologist have deprecated that term and now use “atmospheric river” instead. Additionally, the atmospheric rivers are now graded by a 1 to 5 scale (like the hurricane scale) with an AR3 being moderate hazard (flooding/land/mudslides) and moderate benefit.
