Assistance please with very odd Vista & printer problem

I hate Vista more every day, and I don’t even have it on any of my computers.

Problem:Elderly parents had Win98 machines up until a couple of months ago. I helped them order two identical Dells with Vista Home Premium…my first dumb mistake. A month later, dad decides he needs a laptop for looking up stats while watch sports. I help him order a dell laptop with Vista Home on it…my second dumb mistake. The two desktops are setup in an office.

I bought them a new HP c6180 All in one unit. This unit has built in network sharing so both of them could easily use the same printer as well as from the laptop.

I’ll admit all three of these machines came with the Norton Internet Security installed, and I’ve left it on the machines because of my parents history of clicking on EVERYTHING that comes along on-line with abandon, and thus causing me grief to straighten out the mess that ensues.

I also have left User Access Control turned on on all machines (grandkids visit ya know #-o).

Now to my problem: The freaking driver software for the HP c6180 will simply disappear from the system. Meaning, as far as the computer is concerned, the scanner and the printer has been un-installed from the system. This has happened on ALL THREE COMPUTERS several times. One day the printer and scanner exists on the systems and works just fine, the next day they go to use the printer or the scanner, and nada, it’s not listed any longer. And neither will the scanner. The entry even disappears from the Add/remove programs list. All the other crap software that gets installed with the HP software is still there and works.

I can run the install file for the printer, and one of it’s options is to Add Devices. So, some of the needed software is still there. It just appears that the printer and scanner drivers are being deleted. I can reinstall with no problems, all is rosy for anywhere from a day to several days, then boom, the drivers are gone.

Sometimes I can look in the Windows Event Log and see exactly when they are being deleted, it states as such. But other times, there isn’t anything in the log relating to the disappearing drivers.
I can’t see anything in the log, that to me anyway, would explain what happens just prior to this event.

On my mothers computer, this disappearing act has really happened frequently. But she also uses her computer the most. But I see no signs that either mom or dad are doing anything to cause this.
I did a complete un-install, then reinstall of the software yesterday. And it only lasted 24 hrs before the scanner & printer disappeared once again.

HP has been absolutely zero help. I’ve lost all faith in HP now as their tech support beyond sucks.

No one has access to the admin accounts on any of these machines but me. It makes it even more fun that I’m doing all this via remote log in, as I live 100 miles away from them.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if your aware of another message board that I might have better luck with, I’d appreciate being pointed in that direction as well.
Thanks.

I haven’t dealt with a Printer in ages (hate em) but when installing do you get a choice to install in program File or change the location? If you can I would try and install all the printer software in a folder outside of Program Files and see if that helps…

Maybe create C:\Printer and install there. I have had a couple of applications that just didn’t do well in Program Files on my Vista machine and aftter installing them to a separate folder they work like champs…

Just a “dumb” thought…

Is everything configured to use DHCP? If so, could the printer be picking up a new IP address when it’s turned off/on (assuming it it turned off/on)? The drivers probably want a static address to point at and might go invisible if the IP address they were configured to use doesn’t appear to have a valid printer on it?

Thanks Bob, I’ve been so absolutely frustrated with this, that I’m to the point of no longer thinking logically through it.

I’m re-installed so many times that I don’t remember now if it gives a choice for the folder or not.

But I’ll sure give it another try and find out. Thanks.

Chris, Interesting. I believe that I set the printer up with a static ip address, and “they shouldn’t” be turning off the printer, but I’ll double check and see.

Thanks for the info.

Nope, it won’t allow a folder change, says is must be installed in c:/programfiles/hp to work properly.

Are all the computers WiFi connected and are they put into sleep mode when not in use? I’ve noticed over the last few weeks that a couple of WiFi connected laptops (one XP and one Vista both on different access points) often seem to not be able to renew their DHCP issued addresses after waking up from sleep mode. Both laptops seemed to start doing this at around the same time (about a month ago) after reliably having woken from sleep many times previously. I’ve been wondering whether MS have recently released an XP/Vista security patch related to WiFi and DHCP that could be causing this. A repair often fixes the problem, although on a few occasions I’ve had to reboot the laptop to get it working again.

In your case, if you were being affected by something similar, perhaps the drivers aren’t loading after wake-up because the computers haven’t found the network when the drivers want to load, so the drivers can’t see the printer and refuse to load?

Ok-found that it was using DHCP. Tried to change it to a fixed IP and hosed the connection somehow. Had to have dad set it back to using DHCP via front panel.

But, I have now reserved the IP address for the printer in the router. So, hopefully this serves the same purpose.

The two desktops are connected to the network via wired. The printer is connected via wired.
Only the laptop is using WiFI.

Now-Chris got me to thinking, Dad’s computer is not shut down, it is running WD. And it has NOT been nearly as problamatic as moms computer—which is turned off and on once or twice per day. And with the vista power management, its never really turned off, it’s just at a low power state…which I don’t like, computer is never really “cold booted”.

But, what you said about possible taking vista too long to see the network and this may cause the printer drivers to fail/not load…could it be a our favorite nemisis causing the delay in the network becoming visible and thus causes the drivers to fail to load…namely Norton IS? And I don’t see this issue as much on Dads, because his computer runs 24/7 for the most part?

I do have Norton IS’s firewall turned OFF, but everything else is turned on in Norton. Simply because everytime they sneezed, the stupid firewall was blocking something it shouldn’t, email, IE from browsing, etc. And I would have to go back in and re “allow” apps in the firewall.

Thoughts on Norton as the cause?

I put my fixed IP’s above the range that DHCP issues, so DHCP starts at 192.168.1.100 and can issue 99 IP’s and my printers etc are in the 192.168.1.2xx range.

Out of curiosity… Have you tried one of the Vista forums for an answer to this??

There are a number to choose from that have a lot of people who work specifically with Vista issues etc…

One that I use is:

http://thevistaforums.com/

Or maybe an HP forum?

Ok, had time to fight with this once again. I must say OMG Hp tech support has to be more than totally worthless.

No one ever replies to Tech support Email, and their live Chat simply will not install. Tried it on 3 computers. And phone support…what a freakin joke.

There I feel some better now. :frowning:

Anyone have an HP forum they can point me to? I’ve googled this problem but never come up with anything relevant. Thanks!

Funny you should post again…

I just sigh Ordered a Konica Minolta Magicolor 2300DL Laser printer with the idea, an idea, of connecting it to the network for all the machines in the house to connect to (with the exception of the Vista machine as it does not appear to support) and i sure hope I don’t have as many problems as you…

* JaxWeather hates printers…

Good luck,
Bob

Your a brave, brave man Bob.
I hope you don’t either. I’ve been tempted to pile dad’s three computers, and that “f’n” printer onto a pile of wood, and sprinkling a good dash of charcoal lighter fluid on it all, and having a nice weiner roast for his neighbors. I’d have a few choice words to utter as well aimed at Michael Dell and Bill Gates in the process.

You know, your post about Vista service pak 1 coming soon, and the article, makes me wonder if it’s not entirely Vista at fault from the comments in that article about “problems”.

And Chris may have given a clue as well, about something not waking up properly from sleep. But it’s really tough to pin down when I’m not there on site, and I’m relying on info given to me from the very non-computer geekness of my 80ish yr old mom and dad. The windows event log simply gives enough info to be dangerous, and I’m too stupid to know what most of it means. And been unable to decipher most of it even with googles help.

But I’ve shared computers on Xp home and XpPro with absolutely NO problems at my business.
Heck, I even share one to my business via a VPN connection to my home. I print from home to the printer at the office with no problems for well over a year now.

Ok, I’ll stop rambling now. Been a bad computer day to say the least.

I sincerely appreciate all the help that is so freely offered on this forum by everyone.

Did you try HP’s forum? This question smells very similar.

Thank you Niko! I had not ran across that forum!
At least now I know I’m not completely loosing my flippin mind!

Other’s describe our experience to the T.
I’ll try the work around listed.
Thanks for finding this!

Have I mentioned HP support stinks!

Niko to the Rescue… Nicko to the Rescue… Niko to the Rescue…
Go Niko! Go Niko!..

Ooops an 70’s moment there :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmmm, maybe we should head back to the beach
