We currently run WDL on a virtual machine in our environment pulling data from a Davis Vantage Pro 2.
Every few days we notice the application stops updating clientraw, logging files and the display is frozen.
We then restart the app and it’s a 50/50 chance that when the app re starts some settings are lost.
they are usually: log file settings, client raw location, some main app settings and GPS location settings for the tide / moon / sunrise / set.
i’ve tried re applying the backed up ini files and reg settings with no joy i always have to redo the above manually.
we run the application with admin permissions as well to make sure it has full permissions to write to folders.
is there any log files somewhere to help determine the crash’s and is there an easier way to restore the settings?
When you say “WDL”, I take it you mean the Weather Display program, rather than Weather Display Live which an old and now unsupported Flash based app for displaying your data?
If it’s the main Weather Display software, what type of datalogger do you have? If it a USB datalogger then make sure the USB ports are not in eco or power saving mode in the system settings of the PC or laptop. This can causes the USB ports to shut down and stop the data feed from your Davis console. Windows 10 Power Save Settings FAQ is HERE.
On older consoles, the shielding on the USB cable supplied by Davis wasn’t the best and changing to a better quality cable stopped the data drop outs.
If you’re loosing the basic settings when the program is restarted, this is normally because the wdisplay.ini file is being updated when the program shuts down and it get corrupted. HERE’s the FAQ about restoring the settings.
Lastly, from the top menu on the Weather Display program window, you can go to View > Program Event Log to see if anything has been logged in there. At the bottom of the View window there is a “Program Debug Info” button which may give you some information.
Yes you are correct with Weather Display - WDL my my typo. we are using Davis Weather Link Live and setting Weather Display to pull the data from the data logger.
i will keep an eye on the program logs and debug options moving forward.
i do find it strange the .ini file not holding the settings and once restored still not working - unless im restoring corrupt INI files - can i make a backup of the ini at any time and restore?
You might well be restoring a corrupt file I’d suggest taking a copy of the file when WD isn’t running. So correct any problems, shut WD down, copy the file and then restart WD.
One thing worth checking is whether the ini file is read only. If it is for some reason that would prevent WD from updating it after you fix the settings.
After 2 weeks of running fine - the application stopped updating again - this time i had debugging running so i was able to capture some errors.

try setting under help, about, tick the free memory settings there
also make sure to be using the latest update
where you can unset to use threads under setup, advanced/misc, if that is causing an issue

This time when it’s crashed i’ve lost all my configuration settings.
doing a restore of the INI file doesn’t resolve the issue either - i need to enter everything back in manually.
such as enabling the Station logging - logging details etc
The 1st thing that i would do is, once you have sorted all the setitngs again, click exit, then save and exit, then copy the ini file and save it somewhere (now restart WD), then if it does crash, hopefully the settings will be saved and if not, you can copy and the one you just saved and paste in to the exisiting one (when WD is closed).
Do you also see a backup of the registry file named wdisplayftp.reg? If so, with WD closed try double clicking it and add it to the registry, and see if the settings are back. That might be the wrong way but ihave found in the past that sometimes the ini file alone doesnt do what ive wanted. So ive always restored both files. Even if it doesnt, is not going to harm anything trying it.

Once it crashed it lost all the settings once again - however i was able to restore the INI files this time to get up and running.
