We are doing fine so far… gad it is a big sucker the droid x. However, I did look into an article on a variety of downloaded ills for androids such as security, being stolen and so forth.
I originally was going to get the Webroot for Android, but Best buy didn’t have it in stock and thought I was nuts asking about it. So I figured to see what else was out there. then I moseyed over to https://www.mylookout.com/ and from there settled on their product.
Being in a high school and the opportunity for it to be lost or stolen, it made sense to have something that would remotely wipe, lock and scream for options seemed logical.
I have tried the locate from inside my steel roofed electronically corrupted brick house and it was within 500 feet, nothing to write home about, but I am going outside and see how that works.
the scream option is tempting me, but I don’t know how to shut it off on the DroidX so we are going to let that go.
I don’t have a ton of apps yet…
but curious if anyone else has used the security product yet. I know there are not a lot of malware out yet for the Android, but it is close to summer break and the kids will be needing something to do
The only info on my phone which I care a lot about are passwords, serial keys and host access stuff. All of that is stored in B-Folders which is encrypted. Sync it to my notebook/desktop/other on a regular basis. All phone number are in Exchange and there is already a security feature for that.
As for anti-virus… don’t see much of a need for it. I’m pretty careful about what apps I load and where they come from. If I run into a real problem, I wipe the phone and reload.
I do make backups daily and full backups twice a week (Titanium Backup) and make an offsite copy of that. Been useful when moving devices and needed to restore or turn off bloatware. Needs root though.
I’ve been using Robofrom since it came out. It now has a yearly subscription fee, which I wasn’t excited about. It does syn across my pc, laptop, android, USB thumb drive etc. I believe it has robust security features.
I do use Roboform at home and it helps out a lot. So I am a little paranoid on somethings. I have been saying at school that they really need to get some protection on the macs we are now using. However…they claim we don’t need to worry. just wait until the kids get them. We fixed the log on so no student account can log on to staff computers. The kids use their student numbers and birthdate to log on, but we are word long on and whatever password, so it is a bit more complicated.
In any case, I am worried about having my phone stolen and although there isn’t much to worry about, still being able to wipe it and lock it would make me happy
My daughter lost her phone at school. We just had verizon turn off service, wasn’t a smart phone. Can the carrier lock/reset to default your device (smart phone) if you request them to do this?
This Lookout service can unlock the phone remotely if needed. I guess what I can do is from school or whereever I have computer access, I can make my phone scream (hell, I can make the wife just by suggesting I need more weather stuff in the yard…). I can lock the phone in such a way it can’t be jail broke, but best of all, I can send a signal that wipes all the data and makes it useless.
I would guess then I could through these folks reset the usefulness of the phone should I get it back and Verizon do the rest of activation. When you are a staff person, you have to be so careful of even farting in the room, let alone have the phone stolen. Kids will do most anything.
Oh… it will also track the android to location. Now Verizon doesn’t have their family locator work with smart phones…yet, so I am told. I use that with my wife’s phone to see where she is so I don’t have to call her and bother her. It is fairly accurate. but their Familylocator doesn’t work with smart phones.
Their service will also backup data, but doesn’t do the contacts yet. Verizon and others have a contact backup that does it automatically.Verizon and someone else has it so it backs up the contacts incase the phone is lost. I have that on my, my wife and daughters phone.
Thinking about it, all I have besides contacts are news items … geez better get busy and find games I have a chance on winning. Solitare here I come.
I read somewhere on this board someone was working on an android app for weather display
I use google apps for email, contacts, documents. So I guess I could just terminate all open sessions, and change passwords, and replace the phone. Someone should write a phone home app, for stolen smart devices.
