advice please

Thanks for the info.

Here’s a copy of the way I have the log settup now…What do you think?

logsample.txt (2.61 KB)

That’s much better now it is showing the referring info, see the line that I attached below, that’s someone viewing your signature graphic through weather-watch. That’s the info you would need in a hotlinking situation such as started this thread.

logsample.txt (394 Bytes)

I’ve been reading thru it from time to time but I don’t understand some of it!!

What parts are you not understanding?

GET /index.php - 200 0 7272 153 235 HTTP/1.1 www.n7xrd.tzo.com Baiduspider
Baiduspider?

That’s the User Agent, it’s how browsers or spiders (automated processes like search engine crawlers) are identified.

Ah ok now I’m learning something even at my age!!

Normally you get a lot more info (apache)

baiduspider-119-63-198-28.crawl.baidu.jp - - [30/Nov/2010:16:11:04 -0700] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 200 46 "-" "Baiduspider+(+http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.htm)"

Your log is cutting off part of the agent string. In this case, the full agent string provides you with info about what the search engine is and where to get more info (though that page is a bit sparse of details).

It’s actually in the logfile Kevin, just not in the post.

Baiduspider+(+http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.htm)

n7xrd: If you open the logfile in Excel (space delimited) then all the columns line up and it will be much easier to understand than in e.g. notepad.

#-o Great info Niko I will try that!! maybe that willl help me understand it a little better thanks for your help!
