Adding lightning to configuration

I’m using WE 10.23o with a Davis Vantage Pro. I just added a lightning detector - the hobby boards thing with a serial port. To get Weather Display Live, CWOP, and Weather Underground working, I had to move WD to a server in a different room. It’s connected to the Davis VP and lightning detector via serial ports 1 & 2. On my workstation, I installed WD as a client. I get apparently all of the data from the Davis loaded just fine. However, I don’t seem to be able to view the lightning screens. Is there another way of doing this?

Thanks,
Larry

Wow, 39 folks have read the above post and NOBODY has an answer? Must be it can’t be done!

I’m not sure I understand the question…

Did you see the excellent FAQ by Bob?

you are needing the lightning data information to be transfered to the client version you mean?
there is a lot of information that does get transfered to the client version via the clientraw.txt file, but alot of the lightning information is not transfered
thats the underlying problem at this stage

Yes, that’s right - I was hoping that the lightning information transferred the same way that the metars are.

Ok, no big deal. If this isn’t something that you’re planning to do, I can write something to display lightning.gif on my client machine. That’s probably enough for now. We haven’t had any lightning up here yet, but I’m getting ready!

Thanks Brian.

And to the other fellow, yes, I did read the FAQ. That’s how I got it all working to start with! I had to move WD to a server to allow 24 hour reporting and get around some nasty firewall issues. The lightning detector was added to that server. On my workstation, therefore, I run WD as a client. Since the lightning data goes to the server, I was hoping there was a way to transfer the data in the same way as metars are transferred, but alas, there is not. However, since lightning.gif lives on a subdirectory on the server, I can just write a simple program that displays this on my workstation.

Thanks,

are the PC’s linked via a mapped drive?
if so then you could simply show that gif from that mapped drive ?
(but you would need a way to update it)
there is some lightning data in the clientraw client/server feed…lightning count total, count last minute, and time of last count…i could at least get that data updated in the client version

Hi Brian,

Yes, the WD directory on the server is a share, so yes, I could do something as simple as a batch file calling the MS Photo app or Irfanview via a batch file and just redraw it every so many minutes.

However, if you are going to update the lightning data in the client view, then I won’t bother - I’ll just wait for that. At the moment,
in 10.23z, when you try to “View” → “Lightning Counts”, nothing happens. I was guessing that this was because of my using the client version. If the lightning count directory could be pointed at the server share, and the client version prohibition could be overridden, I think it would work fine! (assuming that’s easier than updating the client to show any lightning data)! (just a suggestion)!

note quite as simple as that, as the numbers are stored in memory / wdisplay.ini file

i will see what i can do about getting the lightning count total and time of last strike into the client lightning screen, but that will be all though, as that is all that is in the clientraw.txt file (and adding any more is going to just make that file bigger and bigger and its already getting big enough)

That should work. If nothing else, I can do something simple to extract it.

Is there enough logic in the client to extract the data to the lightning chart? Would I have to do something to the client to permit it to view the lightning counts?

Thanks,
.

it should be able to update the real time graph yes…
actualy by getting it to monior the strike count, it will be able to update everything…it will use that strike count as the trigger for as if it was connected to a lightning counter…but use the time of the strike from the clientraw feed

i pays to think about these things… #-o

Brian,

Thank you!

Yes, it certainly does pay to think about these things!

Best,

just checking what i already have there
try ticking, in the client/server setup, use indoor/extra from server

then the latest lightningcount number should be passed to the client ok…as a starting point…see if that works for starters

Hi Brian,

That was already done on both the client and server, but where do I look for the lightning count number?

good point
there is a lightningcount number custom tag
and so try adding that to a custom screen and see if it works there
but I will see if i can hook it into updating the clients lightning data today, if i get time
(via an option in that clien/server setup)

Btw, I am using WD 10.23z.

I haven’t used tags or custom screens, so you’ll need to give me a bit of time to learn that but I can do that tomorrow. It’s 9:15 pm local time here on the US east coast. OTOH, I can simulate a few lightning counts and then look at clientraw.txt

uploading 10.24e zip now
which, once you tick the new option in the client/server setup for the lightning on the client)
should give you access and data to the lightning 1 wire counts and graphs in the client version (data is not retrospective though)

Thanks, Brian,

After initial testing, I think it works. I can definitely make the lightning screen show up, but I’m not certain the count is updating properly. The problem might be at my end, however. I used a piezo lighter to increase the count twice. Both times registered on the server, but the count only updated once at the client. In between the first and second attempt, I hit the “update” button onthe client. There appears to be a delay in updating, though, so perhaps it was the “update”.

If it means anything, on the server, the red/green indicator flashes red.

Brian I am running 10.24i and my Client Installation is now displaying the Lightning Count and when i click on it I see the lightning count screen however every hour on the hour it buzzzzzzssss and shows a hit within the last 60 mins…

I have had this version running for about 5 hours and have 5 hits since midnight displaying. Needless to say the Main WD install is not recording any strikes and it is a clear warm beautiful day outside LOL

I have not rebooted this machine since installing 10.24i which I normally do when upgrading as it seems I get cleaner installs so later on I will do so and see if that makes a difference.

hi jax weather
did you want the client version to show that ligthning info?
(just not sure if you did or not, LOL)
so every hour its coming up with a strike when there was none?

I actually had never thought of it but since you added it I said why not LOL

Yes every hour it adds one strike to last 60 mins, so last 60 mins always shows 1, and 1 to “total since midnight” which increments…
