I’ve added an option which allows defined abbreviations and acronyms to have a hover over ‘tooltip’. For example, if you hover over → WxSim you’ll see the definition I’ve created for it. I’ve added a small selection of commonly used abbreviations and acronyms but I’m sure that there are others that need to be defined.
If you see an abbreviation/acronym that commonly used on the forum but isn’t defined, please post a reply to this message and I’ll add it. Please post even if you’re not sure what it means. I/we can find out and I’ll then add it.
Hover doesn’t work on touch devices, I think you usually add a touch response as well?
This solution uses the HTML abbr tag and whilst desktop browsers give the tag a hover over/tooltip type popup, mobile browsers don’t give the tag an equivalent touch response for some reason. I’ll look to see if there’s some extra CSS/JS that can be added to make it work on mobile.
Unfortunately for now this feature will only work for desktop users. There is a modification available to make the HTML abbr tag have a touch response on mobile but that requires the installation of an additional third party extension into your mobile browser. As most people won’t have the extension installed, and probably won’t install it, that still leaves the tag not working for most mobile users.
I’ll keep my eye on the the component to see if a future upgrade fixes this issue. Also, it’s not something I’m currently knowledgeable enough about to try to fix this myself.
How about adding WU?
And EC, for Environment Canada?
