1-Wire Extra Temp sensors randomly spike every few hours

This is a minor bug / issue, but also a very long standing one. I know I’m probably one of the few using lots of 1-wire Extra Sensors so probably not many people in my use case…

Anyways - this is a dedicated post to this issue following up to the one I made here in another thread http://discourse.weather-watch.com/p/550947

Basically, a few years ago (possibly when Brian had to rebuild WD from the groundup maybe?), I started seeing a random spike introduced on Sensor #3 of my Extra Sensors. I have a 1-wire humidity sensor along with 8 1-wire DS18B20-PAR sensors in my network. At first I thought it was a faulty sensor or wiring, but I’m now 100% sure it is not the sensors and something that is going on in Weather-Display.

I have removed several sensors and re-enumerated the 1-wire network to confirm it’s not faulty. Also, I have used the Dallas 1-wire reader and left it to poll the same sensor every 10 seconds for 24-hours and never seen a spike/drop. Which is pretty conclusive that the 1-wire network and sensors are operating just fine.

Here’s what I see. Again…it’s not really a huge bug, but it does introduce some annoying noise into my graphs and makes the trendlines harder to read.

Any advice on how I could debug or fix this issue? I have my Extra Sensor Real Time Graph set to poll once every 60- seconds. I have tried making it shorter/longer and it doesn’t seem to resolve the issue. If I make it longer I might see fewer spikes, but they don’t disappear either.

Hi,
All I can say is my entire station is 1-wire and I do have an indoor temp sensor which I believe is an Extra temp sensor in WD.
I have been running this for around 10 years. I do not see these spikes.
When I have experienced spikes similar to what you see it has always ended up being a fault in the 1-wire network or an external influence of some sort such as lightning.
Before my wind pole was properly grounded and the cables run up the inside of the metal pipe pole I used to see random stuff like you are seeing. Now I generally see no weird spikes at all.
Are you sure there is not something like an electric fence somewhere nearby? Or could the power supply for the 1-wire network be faulty? Or the 1-wire adaptor to USB or serial whichever you use? Or indeed a fault in the USB port of the computer? Or as it is every few hours is there some electrical device nearby operating at that sort of frequency like a pool pump on a timer or similar.
Have a look at the attached image of today’s graphs. These are the typical noise levels I see. All these graphs are 1-wire sensors. My anemometer is broken so no wind graphs at the moment.
Note that it is always a bit noisier during the day for some reason.
So I will be surprised if it is anything to do with WD. I am currently running 10.37S133.

Understand what you are sayhing w0mbat, but I think the issue is that I have so many 1-wire sensors and that is somehow causing this issue in WD.

I’ve been using 1-wire sensing for over 15 years and when there are network, wiring, distance, adapter issues, they have always been reproducible outside of WD. I just can’t replicate this problem using the Dallas 1-wire viewer and even swapping in/out extra sensors and re-enumerating the network shows that it’s not tied to an actual sensor or it’s location in the network.

This PC running WD is getting pretty long in the tooth and I often notice that WD enters a ‘not responding’ state in Windows from time-to-time when I’m trying to use it. Perhaps WD is just a bit more resource hungry than it used to be and this could be related to the issue?

I went from a very low powered netbook to an i7 laptop for my WD machine about 2 years ago and I did notice everything worked better.
Maybe it’s time for an upgrade.
Another thought…there are various versions of the Dallas 1-wire reader program that WD uses to run the 1-wire network. Might be worth trying them. I have an old version somewhere which I could email to you.
Also, have you opened dallas1-wirereader.exe (I think that’s right, might not be exact, it’s icon looks like an ic chip, probably in hidden icons in the taskbar) and watched it polling the various sensors to see if there are errors or weird values?
Otherwise there are some other 1-wire users on this forum…maybe they might have some more ideas.

Can you DM me the older 1-wire reader you have? That’s a simple and easy trick to try first. I am going to upgrade it to a better i5 machine with better memory but waiting on parts for a few days more…

Well you’ve got me there. Can see how to PM but not how to attach a file to it.
Sorry, cancel the whole thing. It is not 1-wire reader I have an old version off. Sorry for leading you on…70 year old brain. 8O
