Well guys I took another close lightning strike last night during a VERY active lightning period and took out I don’t know how many 1-wire sersors and the Peet 2000 console. Console works fine but no RS 232 datacoming out of it. Luckily I have the old Ultimeter II console so I’m not totally out of business. Just more $$$. I’m bidding on the Davis Wireless Pro Vantage to see if the wireless aspect will help. I’m located out in the boondocks so I figure that rf interference won’t be a problem. Not sure how much the ham radio activity, which is pretty minimual will affect the Davis Wireless. This is about the 3rd or 4th time in about 3 years that a close stike or stikes has has been $$$.
As always Brian thanks for all the wonderful support and keep up the GREAT work.
UGH! Living in the lightning capital of the world…I feel your pain. We’ve had a few that have taken more $$'s from us than I care to admit. One EMP even sent sparks up my parrot’s perch…thank goodness the parrot was fine
Hopefully the next purchase will survive the test of time…
Don’t you just love summer? I lost two PC’s last summer and a U2000 to lightning strikes. I then upgraded to a Dell and U2100. Last week while watching out our front window, lightning took down a tree about 200 feet away at a neighbor’s but didn’t damage anything here.
Peet was real nice to me when I lost the U2000. After looking at their computer and seeing how good of a customer I was, they gave me a break. Also, the U2100 was damaged later in the summer by lightning but they repaired it on warrenty. The views are nice at 10k feet but the sky can be downright unfriendly sometimes!
Through all of this though, my ham tower has never been struck! (or at least has no scorch marks). Just to be safe though it’s 50’ from the house which has taken hits over the years.
Well the Peet 2000 console is back for repair at a VERY reasonable price, I might add. I’ve won a Davis Vantage Pro (wireless) so I hope that helps the lightning strike problems. I’m going to elimate the lightning detector from the 1-wire network and also the solar sensor, both located at the end of a long CAT 5 run and mounted very high due to a lot of tall trees. I have a solar sensor coming from the UK that I got quite reasonable on Ebay. I’m pretty sure it’s the same one that Brian is using with his Davis Vantage Pro. I’ll keep you updated and thanks for all the info I get from the forum
PS I have a good friend that will love to get my Peet 2000 system and it’s a good trade for all the favors he does for me.
ps, mikey, there was a rela bad storm in nz recenlty, and here was the metar at that time from Wellington Airport:
