Windows crashes

I am using Windows xp home, a WS 2310, a hp ze5000s laptop which has no serial port, so have a Mobility usb hub. Program will receive data, but system crashes in a short period afterward, evidently when any other activity occurs on computer. I need help!

anything under view, program error log

what are the specs of the computer? any other programs running?

Hi
how much memory does the PC have?

Computer specs:
P4 cpu
30 GB HDD (16GB free currently)
512 MB DDR SDRAM
Intel P4 at 2.4 Ghz

I am running other programs, and there are background computer control programs (screen saver, etc.)

it might possibly be the usb to serial adaptor
i know of one person who had to get another one…
i.e, pull the serial plug and let wd run with no data updating, and see how it goes, as a test

runs fine w/o connection to ws 2310, and receives data until something else happens on computer, then windows crashes

hi
i am confused with your answer

so everything is OK as long as there is no data arriving (i.e pull the serial plug), but problems occur when you have the serial plug in, and data arriving to the program
if the later is the case, then you are looking at a hardware issue with the usb to serial (or what ever you have) and not a software issue (i.e some sort of driver conflict)

Your second scenario is correct. I can have wd running with the ws 2300 disconnected - then connect it to the hub, and it will collect data for a time and then everything crashes. The usb hub works fine with all other devices. I have a printer and a scanner attached, and sometimes my pda. All work fine. I wonder if there is some setting in Win xp that I have missed. I thought you might have had experience with that. I’ll try to pick up a simple usb/serial adapter today and try that.

Hi
the serial routines for the ws2300 are quite intensive, ile lits of DTR toggles, etc…

i have had a couple of reports of USB to serial adaptors causing serious windows problems/crashes/lockups…but getting another one has fixed it
