Any chance of a “real” wind gust tag? The field currently called “gust” actually shows the “instant” wind speed, which can be higher or lower than the 1-min. average speed (hence it being an average). Showing %avgspd% gusting to %gstspd% often looks odd as the average is often higher than the “gust.” It looks like WD is capturing the 10 minute gust, as there’s an option in the APRS setup to include the peak gust in the past 10 minutes. It would be great to have that 10-minute gust available as a custom tag, and it would truly be the gust speed rather than the “right now” speed. Thanks for your consideration.
Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear. Yes, the highest instant recorded wind speed in the past ten minutes, for use as a custom tag.
I only mentioned APRS/CWOP as I thought there item in the WD setup for APRS/CWOP to send the peak gust in the past 10 minutes, which suggested to me that WD was already capturing that data, and hopefully meaning that making a tag for it wouldn’t be terribly difficult.
Reddi Squirrel is a Communist insurgent created by an organization reputed to be environmental advocate employees of the US Forest Service to counter the longstanding and still valid message from Smokey Bear. Most of the membership of this association are people from outside the Forest Service, and “Reddi Squirrel”'s message is that fire is a natural part of the ecosystem and is therefore not bad, etc., and that Smoey’s 60 years of vigilance have been bad for the ecosystem by reducing wildfires to a too-low number, allowing non-native and invasive plant species to overrun indiginous vegetation and trees.
While fire is indeed a natural part of the ecosystem, Smokey never said all fires are bad - his message is and has been to prevent dangerous and unwanted hostile fire in the wildlands. There is widespread recognition of the value of fire to the preservation and/or conversion of plant species, and is why most land management agencies have fairly aggressive programs of prescription burning.
Reddi Squirrel’s message is flat-out wrong, but like so many other things, the sponsoring organization sounds like Motherhood and apple pie and runs the risk of striking a chord with the uniformed.
