Win7/64bit startup problem (WD 10.37Q build 42)

I’ve been using Win7 32-bit for some time now, with no problems.
I have a built-in serial port on motherboard, Davis VP2 weather station.
I was using WD 10.37P.

About a month ago, I decided to upgrade to 64-bit Win7 (on the same machine), so I could add more memory to the machine. Now, however, I’m finding that when I first start up the program, it displays the small status box, which seems to indicate that it’s reading the weather station just fine, but after it is done, main window shows no data coming in, no matter how long I wait.

I can fix this by going to Control Panel:Station Type & Settings:Comport Number, change it to Com2, then back to Com1, hit Okay on all the dialogs, and it starts reading just fine. It continues to run fine after this, until I have to restart the program (typically after a reboot), when the same thing occurs. This never happened with 32-bit Win7. All other programs on my machine are the same as before (except antivirus, which changed from Avira Antivir to MS Security Essentials).

I installed Win7 SP1, and updated WD to 10.37Q Build 42, but the problem is still present.
Any idea what I can do to solve this startup issue?
(BTW, don’t know if it is relevant, but I have “Reset the comport at startup” checked)

sounds like the com port is not available after a reboot
(will be a hardware related problem)
what shows under view, WS2010/WS2500 data setup?
have you tried using wdstartdelay.exe ?

ummm… not sure exactly what you want here…
“WS2000 etc data report” shows:

Actually, I’m not starting it automatically with Windows, I’m manually starting it from the desktop icon, once booting is done. This problem occurs at that time. Since I can make it work by clicking COM-port radio-buttons and OK, I would think that the comm port is fine. It seems to be a WD startup problem. It never occurred with Win7/32-bit.

there are other 64 bit users who do not have this problem

I thought I did answer that. The only object that I see, relating to WS2010, is
Control Panel: Station Settings: WS2010-13/WS2500. The only thing it says right now is:

Normal daily resetting wind/temperature daily value , day: 5
Normal daily resetting rain daily value , day: 5 rain today 0.0 mm

BTW, I don’t have a WS2010, I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2.

about wdstartdelay.exe, I’m not familiar with that utility; is that just for starting the program at boot time, or does it have a benefit any time I start the program?

the view, WS2010/WS2500 is a general debugging window
I know you dont have a WS2010/WS2500

what does it say across the top of the WD Program?

it should say information about connecting the com port at least in the WS2010/WS2500 data window
have you selected the VP station type then the default baud rate (19200)?
wdstartdelay.exe is used to delay the start of WD when windows boots up (i.e you set that program to start when windows starts)

GorLash,

Can you have a look at the datalogger section and see if the “button” is set to green?

I had the same problem, when I moved to 64bit, for some reason it knows the ComPort but does not start the download from the datalogger of VP2.

Two things to do:

  • Reinstall the USB driver, not sure if you have rs232 or USB.
  • Funny enough it could be the barometer thingy, forgot where it was and can’t check at the moment, but Windy will know. If the barometer offset is to big compared to what the barometer pressur actually is (something allong those lines). Then WD does not start the download for some reason. I had to change that and all was “henkie dorie” after that. Not sure if it is related but that was it in my case.

I now run Win2008 R2 64bit for a year or so and no problems with either RS232 or USB.

Sounds like the same bug I’ve got I thought it was vvp bug.
Just to confirm it’s the same bug could close wd down when it fails and then re-=open it and see if it opens normal.

its not the same problem

Are you sure you have the most recent, approved for W7 64 bit, driver for that motherboard’s serial port?

Sounds very similar. Only difference is the op doesn’t close and restart the program but changes the com port back and forth. Anyway judging by your comment you now know what my problem is. I would be interesting if the OP closed and then restarted WD.
