I have been happily running Weather Display for over a year now; first with an OS 968 and then a few months ago I upgraded to a Davis VP2+. While I have used Weather Link intermittently, primarily for adjusting the console barometer, that has been about it.
I have read about Virtual VP and the ability to run both programs at once and I know some folks on the forums here do. I was wondering what data or reports Weather Link offers that WD does not. I have played with it a bit and do like its NOAA reports better.
I would willing pay for Virtual VP if there is a good reason to run both programs. Or is there another program out there that would benefit from running it and WD? What do you think? Thanks!
I’ll second that. My PC can be unstable, and several times I’ve had to use WL data to restore the data to WD.
There’s also some nice graphs in WL that I like and am using on my site - I’m not thjat conversant yet with JP Graph, so the WL graphs will suffice until I am.
I’ve kept WeatherLink running since the beginning primarily for the small text-only NOAA-style climate reports. They are updated for NOAAMO.txt and NOAAYR.txt (current month, current year) every 5 minutes with my upload frequency.
I use Weatherlink to set my console when it needs some tweaking or upgrading.
In addition, I use it as it generates some graphs/reports that WD doesn’t that are specific to my needs. Such as soil moisture and temperature for each of the four depths I have sensor pairs. I also can get a few more than WD charts than does. I run it about once or twice a day and then go back to WD for the rest of the data collection.
Now don’t get me wrong, Windy will produce just about any modification of WD that one needs. However, sometimes it is less work for me to just get a specific report, such as soil, solar or uv and go from there.
Sometimes, it provides me with some thing to compare the data collection. WD by far is the superior software.
I think there are other reasons for running VirtualVP as well. You can run another copy of WD for example as a testbed on another PC using an IP connection which is the setup I use. That way if I do have a problem I can mess around with my test WD and leave the live one running.
I would be interested in running Weather Display to update my web page and upload to Weather Link also if it can be done. Is this process hard to initiate? I like the idea of another backup as my network, mainly my computer can be a little wobbly at times
