Web page and FTP not working

Hello all, Please help me fix a problem I brought on myself. I have just fixed the web cam and had it all working, I was happy.

I noticed a few days later that my web page, exports to WX Underground, Anything WX and APRS where not being sent. If I go to the setup page, and click “Test a data send” it sends but not automaticly. Nothing (I know of or checked) looks wrong or turned off.

To make it wiered, the web cam picture on my web page IS getting updated…go figure.

Any help in trying to figure this out while I still have hair on my head would be welcome.

Thanks,
John B.

Anything in the ftp log that might help??

Dan

Dan, Not that I can see. From what I can tell it’s only getting updated when I do the ‘test’. This tells me the FTP function is working but not automaticly…

I had a few beers working on the web cam setup but I don’t think I had that many. I checked and can’t find anything I might have turned off.

Have you tried the “Test Internet Update” from the “Web page upload/Generation times” page under FTP/Internet Setup in the control panel?

hi
do you have the main internet switch turned on , under connections?
also check that if you have set to use the customise internet and file creation upload, you need to set times for each file to be created and uploaded
aslo, check under view, ftp log, view full log, to see what is happening there

you need to click on view full log

Brian and Dan,
I checked the main switch and it was on, I also checked the custom file. it was off, check again w/it on with same results.

Here is my full FTP log:

Thanks all for the help,

Finished email agenda, no ftp items to do…

that is a clue
you better email me your settings:
go action, back up registry entry now
then email me the files, wdisplayftp.reg and wdisplay.ini from the folder databackup (a sub folder where wd is installed)

Brian,
Did you receive my email with the files?

John

just had to head out when i got that other email
will have a look in a tick

Firewall?

Thought about that Hunter, but riddle me this. If I go to the setup page for WXUnderground and click ‘test a data send’ it works.

Thanks for the suggestion.

John

hi
i am pretty sure i replied to the email
did you get that?

Thought about that Hunter, but riddle me this.

note that if you are running wd on a server, and no ftp needed, then you need to tick, still use for all other, in the connections setup area under ftp/intrnet setup
also check you have the main internet switch on too

Thanks to Brian, Hunter for helping me figure this out. I turned off the antivirus and firewall but still no update. I also checked the ‘use for all’…no luck.

Steping back a bit I noticed the web page was last updated Oct 15. I did a system restore to the 14th and BAM! WXUnderground, APRS and Anything WX where now being updated but not the web page. I checked and the read only property was set on part of the web servers folder, removed that read only and the web page are getting updated.

Now what I can’t tell you is what I did on the 15th and shut down everyting. I didn’t do screen shots before and after to see what was different (Heine site is 20/20) but it’s working now so I’m putting the hood down.

I’ll just be more carefull next time when I do changes and make sure to do one at a time.

Thanks again,
John B.

Yes, that kinda makes sense. Somehow the ‘permission’s’ got changed on the file. Just about anything that gets ‘written to’ be it a file (.log, .txt etc) and even sub directories (example = cache) will need to be ‘chmod’ to certain values. Sounds more confusing than it really is. chmod just stands for 'Change Mode. Files that need to be re-written or updated need to have the permission of that file(s) changed to allow it to be written over and over again. The principle behind it becomes easier to understand once you know what it does. That (chmod) and Transfer Modes are two of your biggest concerns when uploading files to a server. As a rule of thumb graphics/images/pics or what ever terminology you use, need to be uploaded in Binary Mode. The majority of files that can be viewed in an editor will use ASCII. Ever see a graphic on a WebPage that looked as if half was missing and the other part that you could see was distorted, colors smudged, basically it’s a ‘broken image’ and it’s probable cause was because it was uploaded in ASCII mode and NOT Binary. Every run a file (usually .cgi or .pl) that constantly gives you an Error 500 or Internal Server Error? Probably uploaded as Binary and or you forgot to set it’s permissions. Text type file, UpLoad as ASCII and chmod to 755. Your mileage may/will vary.

All files don’t require that certain steps need to be taken in order for it to run. Most will be uploaded and forgotten about, assuming everything works.
RTFM. It will tell you when, why and how many.
