WD new user (some questions)

Hi everyone!

WD new user here with some comments and questions to get started. I downloaded WD as a replacement of my old Virtual Weather Station Software. It seems to offer many more features and it seems solid/supported. However, I find it far from user friendly which leads to the many questions that I have.

  1. I figured out how to generate the forcasticon, forcasticonmetar, moonicon and the graphs.jpg files that I need for my website. However, they won’t update. I can only create the file once even if I select update every 5 or 15 minutes.

It updates only manually be pressing the create file now. No automation. The files stay the same in the webfile folder of WD. What’s wrong? What do I do wrong?

  1. Although I can set the moonicon, forcasticon and the graphs to upload, there is no option to upload the forcasticonmetar.jpg to upload while it exists in the Webfiles folder. There is only the Metar.gif that’s seems to be available for upload. In other words, how can I upload the forcasticonmetar file?

  2. One last question for now. I have 10 files on my localwebsite with peronalized names that need to be modefied with the WD tags and uploaded to my server (put online). How do I do that without changing their names? Which WD feature or Tab allow me to do so?

Thank you very much for helping me at this point in order to decide if WD is worth buying.

Éric

Hi Eric, I’m in the same boat. Working at getting off of VWS. WD seems to have a lot of flexability but finding doc is a problem. I’ve been reading the wiki manual at https://www.weather-watch.com/WD_Manual.pdf but not a whole lot of success. Have you been to the Internet/FTP setup page yet. And I also saw theres some stuff in the webfiles directory on the tags a couple days ago or so. Hopefully someone whos been working with WD longer than us will respond to your request.

Correction. That taglist.txt file is in the WDISPLAY directory.

Just ran into this. Web Files/Web Page setup - there is an option about half way down
that says I want to use custom tags in my web page (add to data…
Don’t know if you’ve seen it or if it helps on the tag portion of your question…

Please bear in mind that the WD Manual is made years old and there have been many releases of WD since it was last updated. The original source document had been lost which makes updating it more difficult.

Thanks Chris.

1st, Sorry to hear about your friends passing.

2nd. WikiDoc:

I still don’t know the relationship (if any) between weather-watch and Brians WD development work

But that is great to know. I saw no mention of a creation data or last update date. And I was wondering about the currency of it.

Thanks for the manual. I had noticed it was old stuff. As for WD not updating my files, could it be it wasn’t run as administrator at first? Is the trial version fully operationnal?

For the tags, I know. I just need to understand where to select my own files et set the upload!

Thank you. Life is slowly returning to normal. Most of the urgent notifications are sorted out now which means I can back online more.

Back in 2002 the WD support forum wasn’t well - inaccessible due to regular crashes and the person who ran it wasn’t able to dedicate the time to it so I volunteered to Brian to set up a new forum for him to provide support through, Weather-Watch.com was born then. It was never a formal arrangement, I just ran the forum where Brian hung-out most often and provided answers.

Brian seems to be enjoying semi-retirement and he stopped providing answers via this forum (and as far as I can tell any forum) so the only way to report problems is via direct email to him. He fixes some problems but I guess there are other things he doesn’t fix.

You shouldn’t need to do that.

It always has been. You get 30 days to trial and then it loses some functionality.

I no longer run the Windows version of WD, but hopefully someone else will be able to help. Basically you create a template file that contains the text/HTML/etc that you want to produce with the tags embedded in it. You then add the template file somewhere into the Internet settings pages as an upload file. Before WD uploads it, the tags are converted into the current text for each tag and then the file is uploaded.

I was able to update and upload the generated files after reseting the FTP features in the ACTION tab of the main menu. Windows bug maybe or just the need to restart the software or reboot my system. Working fine now :+1:

Ok! So each time WD uploads something such as html, txt, js, etc, it also updates the file by filling in the blanks (tags). It is not a seperate function like in my old Virtual Weather Station softwares. Correct?

Tx for the support
