Unexplained crashes

Brian: I sent you two emails this morning with files attached. I am off to work, but thisproblem has happened twice and I can’t find the error.

The program crashes about twice a day. This morning about 5:28 am and yesterday about Noon. The program uploads the data to the internet, logs off the web site then crashes, with a whole bunch of those wonderful error messages here and there.

When I go to the program error log I do have a copy of my custom weather report ( I am going to shut it off today, just as a test) on that along with a data list and some other things ( I’ve sent it).

Nothing has changed other than I’m on version v beta. Yesterday I was on the regular versin u. I changed to a different version incase something was amiss.

Anyway, the only thing changed was the version of WDLive. That can’t be doing anything as the only thing I had to change was the files that I uploaded to the web site and the change to the item on the web page. Other than that everything is the same. The clientraw.txt uploads are the same as the xml. I have uploaded the xml for months now.

I went through and checked the web camera, the voice and the autoanswer and they are all switched off.

I have not a clue on this one.

Don’t know if mine is related…
Running version U
Last night around 7:00pm, my graphs stopped updating. Also, no FTP uploads occurred since that time.
Tried version V this morning - same thing.
Went back to S and everything seems to be running fine.

I didn’t get any crashes - just everything stopped updating like it froze.

This sounds similar to the problem I’m having with windows shutting down WD that I mentioned in my “Windows Problem” thread. My problem is getting more consistent and are starting to happen every day but at different times.

Yesterday I did a free memory function that caused WD to be shut down by windows.

Just to help troubleshoot here…
I see that rick is running XP - did you install SP2?

Maybe we should list our OS

I’m running XP Pro SP2

Yes I’ve installed the SP2, but my issue started before install of SP2 and seems to have carried over.

Hello, I am using version 1016v to and runs now almost 20 hours with out problems, only I have a strange errorlog.

Everything seems to be updating properly and FTP is working now.
I’ll return this to the original poster.

By the way - love the new rain funnels!

I have version 10.15F available . I am tempted to revert to that version, but again I am not sure what the problem is. And I am using sp2 as well.
It runs 6 hours or less then locks up and now locks the computer forcing a complete reboot.

I am going to go through the motions of a registry check and repair, scan disk and defrag and see what happens. So I should be off line a bit tonight.

that error means WD is trying to use a part of the program that has been cleared from memory…when it should not have been…for what ever reason…

so the errors start at 1:45
and then every 5 minutes…
what is set to happen at those times?
i.e you might be able to pin point it

try even not having any virus checker software running or similar…

Those are the same errors I am getting and the times for me were the web page update times.

I did the following and I think I am about ready to give it the try again with the current version.
I did a disk clean to clear out temp files. then a spyware thing, virus scan, ran Registry first aid, defrag then the scan disk ( thought I would go in reverse) and finally a reboot or two.

The only thing I can think might be running ( I am running Zone Alarm security suite) would be the I have some files loading under the general ftp. I’ll shut those off and see what happens. The other thing is that every hour from 6 am - 3 pm I have a weather email. I also have every 7 minutes interwarn doing its thing. No backups, virus scans run at those times. I have those at night when I am at home tosupervise.

That is all I can figure out. My only other choice is to go for the 10.15f version and see how it flies with Wdisplay live.

well 2 (more?) having a similar thing happen is interesting…

one thing that could be a test:
back up your datafiles folder

then exit wd
then delete all the files, and then bring back latest.inf and month92004.inf
and direction2.inf and rainlast24hour.inf

then restart wd…
as it might be a calculation of averages from your data that is causing it

the other maybe first thing to do is to turn off the main internet switch overnight…to see if it stops the error

I’ll give both suggestions a try.

One thing that has always been in the back of my mind ( OK, there are some things back there that shouldn’t be there but…) that with frequent upgrades as WD does experience, there could be come files that might not update and be conflicting as well as some files that just don’t get over written and that might cause some conflicts some have and others don’t .

the only other thing I can think is that maybe Windows xp sp2 does have some factors other than the security features that causes problems. So far I haven’t heard other than some forget to turn off the windows firewall or failure to grant permissions. OH well

I’ll do both of your suggestions tonight and see what happens by morning.

Joe

Win XP SP2 is much more than a few security enhancements. I have many 10’s (maybe over 100) of pages of documents about changes that relate to just about everything it does, particularly in the area of ‘inter-program’ communications (RPC,DCOM etc etc).
Here at work we are testing all our software very carefully due to these changes.

someone mentioned a common theme…
the only commen theme there seems to be is that some people, and its not many, have always had ongoing crashes it seems…
i.e it might just the pc…who knows…and a bad memory address, hairline crack in the motherboard…

but, yes, sometimes its a bug…which i can fix…if i can duplicate it

i will try running your settings overnight joseph…

I did the datafile suggestion for a start. I copied the folder to my desktop and then deleted everything in the wdisplay datafile with the exceptions you mentioned. didn’t find the rainlast24hour.inf any where. but the rest is lumping along as we speak. I also downloaded the 10.17 beta and that is going . I did that before copying and deleting files.

So I’ll let that run over night and see what happens by morning.

the only error I see in the log file after the restart is:
ERROR: Unspecified error at time/date 09:43:16 PM 09/08/04
ERROR: Cannot create file C:\wdisplay3\webfiles\extrarealtimegraph2.jpg at time/date 09:45:04 PM 09/08/04
Cannot create file C:\wdisplay3\webfiles\largedisplay.gif

and that may be normal…

Just in case it’s probably worth to test your PC memory with memtest-86 http://www.memtest86.com/

ardvark
i notice you are using jpg images
did the problems start with using jpg?
(as i see a error about largedisplay.gif…do you animate the large display set in the web files/web page setup?
(you can now, ahem, see that setting in a new 10.17 ready soon…

as it may be the use of the jpg images that is causing the crash

the memory should be good. I have on board 1.071G of Ram and 2.4ghz processor. I have right now available 409 mb free ram and 20 Gig of empty drive space. So it should be fine.

No, I didn’t change anything . The jpg options I have always had. no, nothing is set to be animated. I think WDlive is enough.

I’ll load the new version in the morning after the program runs over night.

I will install the new version tomorrow night if things run fine. oh heck, I will install it as soon as I can. Can’t wait ( holidays were a bear for me)
