Solar % Jump

Every morning around the same time (as the sun is coming up) the solar % starts to rise gradually then jumps to 100%. After this happens the % reading declines gradually until it is correct. This morning the jump went from 14% (about 42 wm2) to 100% with the same wm2 reading. It seems to be a time related function. The last two days it has happened around 07:47am. Eastern US time zone with daylight savings time.

what version of WD?
as i have lessened the amount of extra solar added around sunrise/set (i did that on purpose becuase of the low sun angle not counting as sunshine hours)
in the latest vers

I noticed this in versions 10.17u and older. Just installed 10.17z.

Yep - same here. I started to suspect a faulty sensor, so I’m glad somebody else reported it too.

so, which version of wd have you been using 41 south
i.e try the latest version

Currently 10.17x, to be honest I’m not sure I’ve seen it in this version, but I’ll update and keep an eye on it.

It also does it with v10.17z. At 7:50 AM the solar % jumped from 23% to 100% with reading 25.5 Wm/2 and stayed there for 10 minutes. At 08:00 AM the solar % dropped rapidly over the next 44 minutes to 22% with a reading of 33 Wm/2. The Wm/s readings did not spike during this time period but were on a steady increase.

I’m using version 10.18… This morning, I had the unfortunate experience to have to be up before the sun and watched the unit Solar settings as the sun came up. It appears to be working okay here. There was not jump in solar except as I would expect as normal.

Right now it is at 26% and rising slowly.

Checking this morning and saw the jump occur at exactly 7:50 when the program appears to be updating it’s files. At exactly 8:00, again when the program appears to be updating it’s files, the solar percent starts back down to the correct reading. Stays at 100% for exactly 10 minutes.

Are you sure that you don’t have trees interfering with the reading?

I always note a higher sunlight reading at very low angles (sun shining through the relatively baren trunk region) than a bit later when it gets into the leaf/needle areas of the trees. After clear of the trees things behave normally.

Ditto on sunset.

Using a hobby board unit modified to use 3 solar cells mounted vertically around a semicircle with unsensed region North. Did this to especially pick up first and last light with good sensitivity.

In switch over to 10.17U, I note that “sunset” is not shown on the plot anymore while sunrise is.

Hi - I get the same thing (with .17m) couldnt understand why on very gloomy days was always getting small amounts of sunshine hours.

Will upgrade to latest and observe what happens at sun up.

I checked the low angle and tree possibility but that is not it. The Wm/2 readings don’t rise. The Wm/2 graph shows a gradual increase without the spike. Installed 18c last night and will see what happens this morning.

Yes, I have the same thing here and it’s been that way for a long time. I just installed the new BlueWave solar sensor yesterday and I got the jump to 100 % between about 18:48 and 19:02 last night and again this morning at about 6:53 and 07:18. I’m using 10.18c and have double checked the Lat and Long. I have DST “ticked”, Update solar value from max reading “ticked” and “0” minutes offset. Completely overcast so it was clouds passing by or trees.

08:30 here - as black as yer hat - raining and cars driving with headlights. WDL says 100% solar and big yellow sun icon… WDL solar graph is registering hardly anything… So something is up.

Managed to grab Clientraw and clientrawextra plus a screen shot, by this time it had dropped to 72% solar which is still not right. Only problem now is how do I get them in here for Brian to have a look at?

Latest version of WD and beta3.3 of WDL

but i think everyone has missed the fact that i am doing this on purpose around sunrise/set so that wd is able to count some sunshine hours when the sun angle is low, and the sensor may not be getting it correctly
i have repeated that on this thread a few times now i am sure

HI Brian

If you are plotting w/m2 and not % on the main graph should that also show the spike early in the morning and late in the evening ??

Thanks

Cheers

:?

nope

its only the solar % that is tweaked up, to get it closer to 85% for sunshine
i plot wm/2 myself, so i dont see this myself
the answer i guess is for wd to make the adjustment for sunshine, but then set back to normal, so it does not show on the graph

uploading a new 10.18f now where i reverse this again to keep you solr % plotters campers happy 8O
