Snow fall in inches

We had 5" of snow yesterday. I entered the 5 in the snow input area of WD
and it shows up as just 5 on WDL under snow today and snow for the month.
Is there a way to tag it with inches or " ? I have recieved some questions from
viewers as to what the 5 meant.

wd actualy is treating that as 5cm, but that does not really matter if you are entering it as inches
actualy, in the snow graph in wd, i need to set the scale to inches or cm

maybe julian can add a xml tag to show which unit you are using

It would be better if the output from WD was a consistent format. I could then make options for the appropriate unit of display as a tag and possibly also as a button so viewers could change units - as with the other instruments. But it needs to always be fed from WD in a consistent unit.

humm
wd expects cm to be entered…and outputs that
and, also, though, if you enter inches in the input daily weather, then wd converts that to cm, and sends that to wdl…
thats what supposed to happen

So it happens already then? It’s always in cm in the clientraw file?

Julian

yes…
it uses the cm snow reading from the input daily weather
as long s that is entered as cm (do not enter the units, just set the number (and if you enter inches, then wd should auto set the cm from that inches inputted))
then it will be cm in WDL…
(but then you would need to get WDL to convert that number to inches if inches is selected for rainfall)

sure whish the USA would convert to metric

as long s that is entered as cm (do not enter the units, just set the number (and if you enter inches, then wd should auto set the cm from that inches inputted))
How does WD know whether to convert to inches or not if only a number is entered?

Julian

ok
i am wrong

you enter enter inches of snow or cm’s of snow in the input daily weather, which ever you use
then in the clientraw.txt, if you have mm for rain set in wd, then its cm’s of snow reported to WDL (from what is entered in the input daily weather), and if you have inches of rain set in WD then its the inches of snow reported to WDL (that you have set in the input daily weather).
so i guess wdl needs a flasg in the config file to set wether you are passing to it cm’s or inches of snow number ?

That would be perfect!

Julian

so its over to you julian, LOL?
(to set a flag in the wdlconfig.xml if its inches or cm the snow that has been entered into wd, is that what you mean?

But if everything else is sent in metric, and converted by WDL if necessary, wouldn’t it be better/less confusing to stick with that system and always send the snow in metric too?

yes…that would be best
it will mean wd will have to convert the inches entered to cm
the problem was that people were putting in the units…
i will have to strip that out…
i will do this later today
( have to head out now)

Just let me know what you end up doing and I’ll make WDL do what’s needed LOL

Julian

10.20i converts to cm now auto…should do

OK great, I’ll mod WDL to allow unit switching as with the other instruments.

Julian

I seem to be a little confussed. I thought that Konfl was talking about the snow fall total showing on the WD live. In the snow fall totals box it only shows a number. It doesn’t not tell weather it is inches or centimeters.
So Jullian are you putting a switch that will change it from cm to in? That will be nice. However, it needs to show what format it is when the site first loads.

Thanks for giving me a change to add my part. I am curious to see the outcome.

I am running version 10.20i but I don’t see any difference in the WDL part.

I seem to be a little confussed.

note, i made a small change that was needed for the snow bit of information units change in a new 10.20i that will need to be used

I just downloaded version 10.20i. Now my snow does not show up in WDL at all. The snow for the month is still in WD but shows 0 in WDL. Is it me, or have others experienced the same problem?

Dave (K6NLF) :frowning:

i will do a test here
but i made a mistake in converting it to cm…i.e converted it (inches) all the way down to mm instead
and I now also see a line of code i missed for snow for the month to date and year to date
(uploading that fix now as another new 10.20i zip, will be ready in an hour )
