Server downtime for memory upgrade

Apologies for the unannounced server downtime this afternoon. The weather-watch.com server has just had a memory upgrade (to 1GB) because it seemed to be starting to suffer under heavy load. The forum feels a little faster to me now, with less of a delay before pages are displayed. I’d welcome any other comments about server performance, especially if you think it’s worse now than it was before!!

It seemed to be variable before - sometimes sluggish, other times quite fast. So far it’s been good.

Strangely enough I was upgrading my servers memory today as well.

Same here. It was mostly quick but sometimes very sluggish
It seems to be quick at present.

Seems much better now - there were times in the last couple weeks where pages took a while to load - real snappy right now!

My sat connection is not good for timing page loads, but I know in the past week or so the new posts icons were lagging behind. I would read all the new messages in 3 or 4 sections before they would update. It’s keeping up just fine today.

–Better scratch that, I have read all the new posts and the icons haven’t changed yet #-o

I think that depends on how you navigate around whilst reading messages. If you use the back key to go back to the board index page after reading a message, the index page is cached, so you see the original page still with the new icons on it. If you refresh the page it should update correctly.

It’s probably the way I read the messages. In each topic that has new posts I read the oldest message (hit new) and then click on “previous” until I reach the end of new messages. I then click on the Weather-Watch.com link, in the tree, to return to the forum listings. From there I go to the next section containing new posts working my way from top to bottom.

Usually when I click on the Weather-Watch.com link and return to the main page, the section I just read does not show the new posts icon. But there are occasions when I have read all the new posts, in all sections, and the new post icons that were on when I started are still on. Sometimes there is a new post or edit, but more times than not the icon just hasn’t updated to reflect the correct status yet.

Chris -
The site is very slow for me today - pages taking upward of 30 seconds to load, and some not displaying at all.
I don’t think it is me - all other sites I’ve been to today are quite snappy as usual.

this seems to be ok now snowman…

It was very very slow for me about 10 hours ago but it’s fine now.

There appeared to be router problems at the hosting site this morning. I was getting very bad packet loss from around 09:30. I didn’t get a chance to check what the cause was or how long it lasted because my dad came to visit. It seemed OK by lunch time. I’ll take a look at the server and see if I can spot anything else that’s wrong.

Thought it might help you out - here are a couple ping tests - the first is to yahoo - the second to weather-watch

I’m beginning to think there may still be some network problems at the hosting site. Sometimes I get fairly good ping times from the server, other times it’s very slow. I’m seeing something similar to other servers on the same segment. However, it’s variable…a bit like the forum speed at the moment.

I’ve been doing a fair bit of tweaking and tuning of the server over the last week or so. The network problems I was suffering from seem to have calmed down for a while as well.

I’d appreciate any comments on performance over the next few days (not over the last few days because I really only finished the tuning this evening). I’m mainly interested in two aspects of performance on the forum…

  1. What average performance feels like, e.g. it’s good 99% of the time, but slow on occasions
  2. How bad performance gets and how often, e.g. about once every 10 minutes I wait 30 seconds for a page to display

I’m not expecting anyone to time things, I’m trying to get a feel for your perception of performance.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If any of you know Victor Meldrew, I’ve just had an “I don’t believe it” incident. The network problems which appeared to have gone away have returned in the last 10 minutes :frowning:

I’m seeing average ping times of over 300ms to the server with maximum ping times of around 1s. Pings to the hosting company server are averaging 30ms, so it’s something locl to my server.
