I am running WD for abt yr and half… and now I am challenging My
self and running a Network…
I have things work ok … Now and WD is Up loading to my Web Page ok
But I believe I ahve a wide open Firewall if any at all…
Thinking abt installing Internet SecurityProgram… It has Fire walls and etc… Is/Has anyone ran WD in a Local Network and hows is it with a firewall??.. Any Hits??
I’ve had some issues with the latest (5.x) version of Zone Alarm not wanting to let the web pages display, but that may be partially a router issue here as well. I’m using an SMC router rather than linksys, which may impact my results as well
wb0blv,
What model of router are you running? Most all routers block all port by default unless you open them intentionally. In addition, routers are normally better because they stop all traffic before it even reaches the PC.
Or from the “trust is good, control is better” school of thought…
Reasons to use a software firewall after a router:
#1 A well configured router should block just about anything nasty incoming, but if you don’t use ZA or similar on the PC’s you have no way of verifying that the router is doing its job.
#2 ZA will also report and control applications on your PC that are trying to access the internet. Your router isn’t going to do that. Some things you might not want accessing the internet are trojan or adware programs that you inadvertently or unknowingly installed, and applications (Symantec’s are some of the worst) that want to go get updates all the time - these can screwup your WD uploads, or burn up all your CPU.
i just ran spyadare, and if found and cleaned up 270 instanes (mostly repeat files), from a precision time and date manager programs, which came free with some software i downloaded 8O
I have a network with four hard wired pc’s and a wireless network connected as well. I use Norton Internet Security with personal firewall which logs intrusion attempts etc. When you carry out your wd prog updates, it asks you if you want to allow access for the new prog. It is easy to configure, and has worked well for me.
