Install perl (I used Activestate perl, its free). Perl for windows
Get and install mrtg and setup per instructions. MRTG here
Setup an Apache virtual host, or a and point to your mrtg work directory. Plenty of examples in “httpd.conf”. IIS configuration is different, but I don’t use it.
MRTG can actually be used with any switch or router that has SNMP services.
Anyway… You can put up to 253 IPs behind one router by using switches. If you need more IP space, you will need an additional router and another physical "layer"of swiches or by using VLANs without the need for another physical layer of switches… Unless if you have gig internet speeds, you dont need a gig uplink to the router, but gig links or stacking modules between switches is very ideal.
I appreciate the infomation. I just got my rebate card from Verizon for my droid so that is going to pay for this product. netgear… ok… is Linksys any good?
I see I have a choice… I might also go over to office max… they have the Tul pens that I really like, so I might grab some of those while there… that is pay for them.
i ran a similar speed test on what I have right now with all that stuff. What I find interesting is that it uses the server in Seattle although I am thousands of miles away in Des Moines Iowa. OMG.
This is something that has changed, Qwest moved their server connection over to seattle from Iowa… wonder what they are up to?
Normallly the upload is 5 and although I am tested on the Qwest it is closer to the 40mbps. ah truth in advertising.
I appreciate the information.
I ran the test 37.55 down , 4.33 up… about right considering all the things that are going on from my end here.
Every 2 min, it seems the grand kid is asking… “when will it be 80.” so I reply as soon as the cloud cover goes away… supposed to hit 80, then storms tonight, mostly east and north of here.
I have two LinkSys 10/100Mbps Workgroup “switches” behind a LinkSys WR54G Wireless “router” (a 8 port in my office, and a 5 port behind the TV). Love LinkSys; however the 8 port runs very HOT (about 100 degrees). With all the hardware I have running in that room I’m looking at replacing it with a Netgear. I’ve been trying to find the big heat offenders and picked up a Rosewill REGD-TN439L0 Infrared Thermometer. I would have never thought that switch & my Apple Time Capsule would be the ones that are the hottest.
When I upped my internet service in December 2010 they mentioned a major speed upgrade in the first part of 2011.(nothing yet) The new system was being set up around town at that time. Her words were we would be getting “blazing speeds”. Went with the gigabit switch hoping for the best!!! Probably overkill as mentioned but can always hope. I have cat5 cable to the computers and cat6 to the Roku box. I also ordered new shielded cat6 cables for the computers. Should arrive Tuesday.
I settled on the Netgear gs605. it is a 5 port, but that should be fine. 40 bucks… sheesh… just have to settle on the location. the only downside is one of the 5 ports has to be the input port rather than a separate, but it is tiny enough to fit most anywhere. I am getting 100mbps right now and what I was experiencing was the wireless was losing signal every now and then.
I wouldn’t hold my breath if this is something a rep told you when you were considering upgrading…
I mean sure it’s possible but how many folks have called their ISP and asked if they block port 25 (when they actually do) and are told “No way we would not block an email port” (assuming the rep on the phone knew that port 25 was the default SMTP port"…
That seems to be the downside on all the low end 5, 8 & 16 port switches. If you need it to connect to another switch or router you always loose one port. They should really adversize them as 4, 7 ,15 port units  I think your really going to be happy with it…
Niko, That’s good to know. Mine is out in the open and shows 100 degrees all the time. I had a 2nd A/C duck installed last year and my office is still hot. I work from home and sometimes it really gets a bit warm especially in the summer months when it’s weel into the 90’s here in Central Florida.
Hey dude, have a consideration for your less fortunate buddies, 34 megs is BLAZING SPEED, only way I will ever see BLAZING DSL is if I set fire to the pole
I would be very happy with 12 Mbps too. In fact I would be moderately pleased with my 3 Mbps AT&T DSL if it wasn’t capped at 1.5 Mbps for most of the day (but I guess if you have insomnia and want to stream a movie at 3 AM it’s just great).
OK, that’s my ration of whining used up for April
I see you got the gigabit variety. I kind of expected you to get a few more ports. I know ive seen the GS108 on newegg on sale here and there for $60 with free shipping because that’s the one I was going to get for my gig network layer.
I actually have a JFS524 up until I replaced it with the procurve2524. Its sitting unloved on my parts rack.
I have 2 ports open, I did look for the 8 port but they didn’t have it.
for a town this size, we have real limited computer stores.
We used to have CompUsa and I got tons of stuff when I needed it, it was fun to shop there, but they went out. Heck we are losing our borders book store too.
Anyway, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, Walmark, Costco and we do have an Apple Store, but they sell apple stuff to the general public. If I asked a geek there about a switch they would give the deer in the headlights look.
So the next option is to order it online and there we have the selections. I just needed a simple switch and I got it . I just connected the Weatherlink IP cable to the router to the switch and connected the weatherlink ip module cable to the switch… very little to do. I still have a full router but the basement computer and the IP link is running on the switch. It isn’t a bad unit and it is by the hole that leads to the basement argh…
The 100mbps is probably due to the board in the basement computer. I could order a faster board but I think it is working fine right now.
I generally shop around for days online before settling in for something. Des Moines does have computer stores, but they are business orientated with business prices which are not Aardvark prices. Oh in celebration I slightly revised my website… I suppose since it is 81, I should grade papers and do tests, huh?
