Program Crashed

Woke up this morning and checked the weather program and it had closed down. Can it not run 24 / 7? After I restarted it, it closed down again after a couple of minutes. I did a computer restart and now it seems to be running OK. I thought I saw somewhere where it would do a periodic restart but after pooring through the billions and billions of menus I can’t find it. Is there something I can do to keep this program running? Also I’m a MAC guy so I don’t know the finer points of windoze. There’s an option to run as a service would this be a good thing? I’m running W2K Pro, 512 megs of ram, Celron 766

Thanks,

Jack

What kind of a weather station are you running and what version of WD are you running? Are you using the webcam options?

Sorry, I should have included that information. Lacrosse WS-2310 in wired mode, WD V 10.15z. I’ve just be running it a couple of days. No webcam.

anything under view, program error log??

The program crashed last night at hour 22 so none of todays stuff reset. Only thing on the error log is resetting wind/temperature daily value, day 20 and Reseeting rain daily value, day 20 from what I assume was my forced reset.

Would the program run better as a service? Does it matter?

no the service thing is for windoze NT… it should be fine just running as a program… do you have anything else running on that computer?? :?

what you can do it go setup, general options, run weatherdog watch program… that will start WD up, if WD quits

hi
some things to check:
under help, about, do not have ticked, free memory
also, try not running any screen saver and hard drive power saving mode, etc
also, check the programerrorlog.txt file
check those and get back to me

yes, the program normaly runs 24/7
(for weeks and weeks)

The computer is running as a FTP server so IPswitch WS_FTP Server
Version 4.00 is running. I don’t get a lot of traffic so I don’t think that should be affecting it. I can run Heavy Weather and I was evaluating Virtual Weather station (lots of things didn’t work) both ran for days without crashing. I’m also running WebDav from the IIS 5.0 of W2K pro for web server. I do not have any screen savers or hard drive power saving setting turned on. It is set to run 24/7 full blower. It’s on a KVM switch so I can switch the monitor on and off through it. This is what the programerrorlog.txt file says

Resetting wind/temperature daily value , day: 20
Resetting rain daily value , day: 20

I had to do a manual reset of the days info after I rebooted the computer. In the about section neither of the Free memory boxes are ticked. Says Total memory on this PC 536.330 mB Free memory 298.424 MB CPU useage is ticking between 1 and 8% and will jump up to 100 % for a few seconds then go back to between 1 and 6. As of 12:07 am on 8/21 windows uptime is 16 hrs 30 minutes

Would ticking the minimise the program daily to refresh memeory use be useful?

I will checkout the weatherdog watch program.

Thanks for the suggestions

hi
yes, that minimise program daily helps

see if a pattern develops with the crashes (i.e a certain time) and let me know
thanks

So far so good with the Weather Display program, it’s been running for awhile now without crashing. However I’ve had to do a couple of restarts, not because of WD but because of Weather Display Live V 1.08. It will hang on a data point (has done it twice) Checked it this morning (8/22) and it was hung on 6:52 PM on 8/21. If I restart the program it starts running right again. Is this a limitation in the Evaluation Version or do I have something not working right? When it’s working it works great but twice it has hung on a time and wouldn’t move off until I restart the program.

when you say restart the program, do you mean weather display?
WDL gets it data from the clientraw.txt file
so either that is not updating anymore, or its not being ftp’d anymore by the separate clientrawrealtimeftp.exe program…check that is still running

Yes I had to quit and then restart Weather Display. It must not be updating the clientraw.txt file because WD is running on the FTP computer so the clientraw file is being written directly to the FTP folder, it does not have to be uploaded. I am also running the web page that is generated by the WD program and while WD live is hung up all the information on the other page is up to date. Should clientawrealtimeftp.exe be running all the time? In task manager the only application running is WD. I looked under processes and clientraw isn’t running as a process either. It is updating correctly on the web page at the moment. What should I check for next time it hangs?

hi
do you mean wd is running on a server>?
if so then the clientrawrealtimeftp.exe does not need to be running…

next time, try deleting the clientraw.txt file

Yes, it is running on the server. I’ll delete the clientraw.txt file next time and give you the results.

Thanks for your help with this.

Program went down again. Here is the log entry

ERROR: Unable to write to WDISPLAY.INI at time/date 8:44:15 AM 8/23/2004

After the program when down when I would try to restart the program it would bring up the splash screen and then go down before it would get to the load settings part. Checking the error log after this resulted in a blank page. The last log entry on the Action/view and correct log setting was at 8:27 AM so I’m not sure what it was doing between 8:27 and 8:44 am. Also around 2 am I checked the program and it had 3 weather display watchdog icons on the task bar. I closed down all but one. The computer was still running, just not WD until I rebooted the computer. I looked at the task manager before rebooting and didn’t see anything unusual in the applications, CPU usage or processes.

unable to write to wdisplay.ini
humm, maybe windows does not like WD using a plain old text based ini file like that
check that file is not now write protected (you will find it in the folder c:\winnt or c:\windows)
what version of windows?

humm, maybe windows does not like WD using a plain old text based ini file like that
Gee, that's a big leap, there's a lot of other heavy duty stuff happening on that PC. Maybe try taking down some of those other programs and then see what happens?

i am just thinking of all the new windows patches…
anyway, for that error to occur, the wdisplay.ini must be locked/write protected, or similar, by windows or by another program…evena antivirus program can cause problems,i.e it checks the file, and then wd cant write to the file…a good firewall and sensible email use is good

try not running a antivirus program
(I mean they give you a virus just so you subscribe to the updates…more money for them)

Seems kind of strange that it would run for a day, day and a half and then suddenly the file can’t be written to. No it is not locked or write protected. I’m running W2K pro with all the latest patches. I’ll try running it with the Anti virus turned off (Norton AntiVirus V 9.05.15) and see what happens. I’ve also go another Weather Display Watchdog icon in my task bar for a total of 2. I don’t think the program has been restarted because I’m running in the demo mode and you have to answer the nag screen for the program to come up. I had 3 icons up there early this morning. They are running as a process.

well, norton anitvirus others have had problems with
I dont recommend nortan antivirus, or nortan firewall for that matter, or active protect…they all can cause problems…by locking out files, etc…
Zone alarm is a good program

watch dog: when wd has not been running for a few minute, its start it up again
but also, though, when wd starts, and you have the watch dog in use, it starts up the watch dog program,.,so then you have more than 1 watch dog program running.,.,…i need to find a way to find if a program is already running…
