I have Windows 98, WD 9.96a, and I’m having a problem trying to setup
my webcam image. I had been in the “Setup/view direct live web cam
capture” screen trying to set the location of the gif file when the
program hung, then windows crashed while I was trying to ctrl-alt-del
to kill WD. After rebooting, when I try to get back into that
setup screen, I get this error:
ERROR: List index out of bounds (0) at time/date 8:51:11 AM 11/8/03
Thanks! That worked with no fuss, and I even figured out how to
get everything going the way I wanted to (I tried this a few months
ago and could never get it to work quite right…).
May I put my 2 cents in (an American expression) on your promised
(threatened?) impending retirement? If you do go on to other
endeavors, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU’VE ALREADY DONE! If you
can ignore the slings and arrows of outrageous forum participants,
et al., and hang in there with us, THANK YOU EVEN MORE! I don’t
post too regularly to the forum, but I read it weekly to stay in
touch with what’s going on. I’m proud to be a member of the worldwide
WD fraternity, long may it live and prosper.
Whoops, I’m not out of the woods yet. I was able to successfully grab
and create at least one image. Then the image would stop updating and
it would just show a gray background with a time stamp (the time stamp
keeps updating). I don’t know how many images were successfully
created before it went gray. This is true for both the gif and the
jpg files. There is this error in the error log, which is probably
shortly after I turned on the web cam:
ERROR: Access violation at address 00596DE5 in module “WEATHERD.EXE”.
Read of address FFFFFFFF at time/date 11:38:59 AM 11/8/03.
Here are all (I hope) of the relevant settings:
Creative PC-CAM 880 (Video)
Capture
MajorType:Video-SubType RGB24 Format:VideoInfo RGB 640x480 24 bit
web cam file destination: c:\wdisplay\webfiles\webimage.gif
Nope, it’s still gray after the restart. The program log doesn’t show
any errors, but new images are still created as all gray background.
One more possible clue is that the .jpg file has the full time stamp
in it, but the .gif file only has “9:” (it was 9:29:41 when it took
the snapshot).
You might try (Under Web Cam capture setup) (Lower left of page) resetting the video driver to use, capture method, and video mode to use.
Then save, exit and restart WD.
I tried your last suggestion, but
now the pictures are all black
instead of all gray. No errors
in the error log.
Does anyone else have this problem
or is it just me?
I was using Webcam32, and it works
pretty well, but the problem I
keep running into with that software is that it will run for
a random amount of time then the
image will get stuck. I went to
their forum (not very helpful,
especially compared with this one)
and found one weird kluge to address this exact same problem. I
tried it, but it didn’t work for
me. Has anyone run into this (and
solved it?) with Webcam32?
Does anyone have any other
recommendations for 3rd-party
Webcam software?
I reselected everything (camera, capture method, video settings), and
set “live image” on (I had had it off for all previous tests). Now I get
a live image, and the first snapshot capture works. Then very quickly
(next snapshot? at least within an hour) the snapshot is all gray, but
the live image is still OK. I’ve gotten the same results with capture
method “capture” and “still”.
Also note that I haven’t turned anything on on the top-level webcam
page. I assumed this is all about animation, java, daily pictures,
and I don’t need any of this – just the regularly scheduled snapshot
capability.
hi
strange.
its works great for me
whats strange is that its working, and then not working…
humm
have you set a file name and a location for the file?
try 1 minute interval too
Yes, I set the filename & location, and during the brief periods when
it was working, the file was there. I’ve only tried 15 minute updates.
However, now I’m afraid things have gone from bad to worse. WD crashed, then Windows crashed. I rebooted. I then got an error in the WD error log when the program started up. I did the reboot - start WD thing 3 times. First 2 times I got the error, the third time no error. I then pull up the setup webcam page and things are different: the live image & take-a-snapshot buttons are now turned off. Even if I turn them on, it won’t give me any options on capture method or video source, but it still recognizes the driver. I tried to get back to using my other webcam software, but I can’t. Even with everything turned off in WD, the Webcam32 software tells me another program’s got control of the camera. I turn off WD – no change. I reboot, then turn on Webcam32 (and not WD) – it still tells me someone else has the camera!
Do you have any suggestions to get me back to square one: not
taking pix with WD but having Webcam32 (with all its flaws) taking
the pix?
To make a long story short… I managed to get back to square one:
the webcam is turned off in WD, and works (most of the time) via
the Webcam32 software. I think I’ll just keep things this way until
I get the energy to get a new computer and redo everything for XP.
Thanks for your help,
Mike
p.s. I kind of miss the Windy avatar, but it’s nice to put a face to
the famous father of WD (and presumably, of the tot in the picture).
