I am at a loss with this scenario, any ideas, suggestions will be appreciated, the situation is this (I have changed my WD settup from my work machine to a completly seperate machine that acts as a server on a network-:
Machine intel P3 733Mhz with 192meg RAM, operating systems Win 2K Pro all updates, applications WD 10.17, and atomic clock. no other applications installed. The system at start up showed (from about WD) and task manager 60 meg spare RAM the system has an uptime of 4 days plus, spare RAM now = about 25meg it’s “loosing” about 10meg per day ??? (I know if I re-boot it it will come back to 60meg) Task manager shows nothing unusual with total memory usage at 96 Meg. WD.exe using 59,052K and atomic.exe 3,276k, I have 23 processes, 245 threads and 4929 handles, cpu usage is normal at around 1-2%with the 1 minute spike up around 60%.
It will run out of memory I suggest over the weekend, my question is where oohhh where is my memory going ??
Any help appreciated ! thanks
Cheers
Geoff
hi
dont trust the free memory reported under wd , about…
instead use task manager…
also, try minimising wd to the tray (and have it do that auto, via ehlp, about at 3am), and watch its “virtual” memory use drop, via task manager, proccesses (WeatherD.exe)
go figure!
yup I have had that all setup since day 1 Brian cause the machine is connected to a kvm switch I use the same keyboard/monitor for both machines and I only check the WD machine occasionally (usually daily). WD help about and task manager both seem to report the same amount of free memory close enough anyway’s. I thought about memory leakage, but I dont know if that would explain why if I reboot the machine it will come back with about 60meg spare ?? I was going to try for the record uptime but I dont think I will be able too until I get this problem solved LOL
hummm thats interesting, I bit the bullet, closed down WD and re-started it and the free memory has jumped from 28meg to 61 meg as I thought. did’nt stop or re-start anything else. So i’m still non the wiser
That is strange, can you not see what’s taking a greater share of memory? It would be interesting to see if it would actually crash, my bet would be that w2k would be smart enough to reorganize the physical memory and swap something out to the disk (swap file) before that happened. My w2k system that’s been up for 12 days (last time the power went out) is currently at 84.656 MB of 256 MB which is about where it usually runs.
Another thought. If you have a w2k server CD available you can install the Administration Tools (adminpak.msi) on w2k pro machine (this is blessed by Bill) and then you have a bunch of tools for tracking down memory issues.
thanks for that Nikoshepherd, I have a version of server 2003, not win2kpro maybe that will do ?? If I add up the memory usage from task manager it is about 96meg so that seems about right WDapplication is the largest at 59 meg, nothing else appart from system idle is taking any processor time to speak of. I will let it run over the weekend, and take your suggestion and see if it crashes, should be about Tuesday by my calculation we shall wait with baited breat!!
thanks
Geoff
its a good idea to have ticked, minimise at 3am, under help, about
(as that refreshes the memory)
My weatherdisplay is using 64 megs, so that’s right in the ballpark. Unfortunately I don’t think the 2003 admin tools work with 2000, which is a pain because you can download them from MS, but the 2000 ones are only on the CD.
Good new’s, problem solved !!..I got rid of “VET” antivirus and the problem also has dissapeared !!..One to bare in mind!!
Cheers
i think that might have been causing the errors about the wdisplay.ini file…i.e the antirus program locks the use of wd files and cause problems
i dont use anitvirus program, except for the free avg…which just checks system critical areas i think…
a good firewall and good email practices works for me
Well, that’s really good news Geoff
I never should have tempted fate by participating in this discussion because my #2 station (was light on memory anyway with only 128M) is now leaking memory. I added another 256M, which has stopped it being a critical issue and I guess I’ll just start taking stuff off there until I find out what’s causing it
note that as the real time graphs get more and more data added to them, memory use goes up
but, when they reach the limit, which you have set, they then clear, and that frees up memory
Sorry to hear that Nikoshepherd, yep, guess thats all you can do, maybe start with whatever you installed last, and work backwards, I was nearly at the stage of shutting everything down and just leaving to O/S running for awhile and see what happend, I ran all the diags in the world, which showed up nothing at all, I was almost running outta idea’s lol but suffice to say all now seems well, hope it stays that way awhile, good luck with it !!
Cheers

note that as the real time graphs get more and more data added to them, memory use goes up but, when they reach the limit, which you have set, they then clear, and that frees up memoryMy other box runs WD for weeks (months if the power stays up) and the memory use just hangs around the same value, so I'm not thinking it's WD unless it's something changed between 10.13k and 10.17, or maybe the realtimeftp. Oh well, it's got enough memory to run for a couple of weeks now so there's time...
Thanks for that Brian, I thought that was the case (graph limit) I check it around the same time each morning when I get into the office and it’s always around the same value now 140/150 meg free, so thats all very cool. Will be interesting to see how long it goes for, cause it will never ever run outta power, is backed up by a UPS that will support it for an hour, and the whole building is backed up by a 450kva Cat generator LOL soooo we wait and see !!
Maybe the next time it gets a re-start is when you bring out another version with some other tantalizing feature which I wont be able to resist, which I am sure you will do !!
cheers
I use Ram Idle pro to monitor and free up memory. However there are several freeware programs that do the same thing. Here’s links to a couple of them.

I have not used these myself, but I think either one would be worth a try.
Jeep, what OS?
Win 2k & Win XP.
I’ve got my 1 wire ready to set up on a Suse linux box this weekend when I have some time.
Errr… well I guess I won’t be setting up my 1 wire station with Suse. I just saw 1 wire is not supported…
Guess I’ll move the 1 wire to a windows box and set up the La Crosse on the linux box. Darn.
