first time snow has fallen in NZ’s largest city, Auckland, for 72 years, yes
the highest easiest location to get to in the area had enough snow to coat everything in one snow shower
but it did not last long
the big snow event of 1939 there was more snow and it accumulated to a lower altitude
maybe might have been as good this time around (as the setup that has produced this event had all the ducks lined up) if was not for global warming
(now thats a different way of looking at it, instead of people saying that this snow event dispells global warming (not sure how a couple of colder than normal days will upset 20 years of a warming trend (the month to date was slightly above normal until yesterday)
Wow !!!
Nice stories very interesting movies at facebook
(Hm Brian what’s left from your ’ other interests’ in the cold )
very bad summer here each cloud means at least a shower
sometimes it’s raining all trough the day/night
for all times record we had a warmest day in July and most rainfall in august
some days later
well anyway, as tried to see it as a weather enthusiastic, the wife becomes a little
nagging, however we had our holidays yet a week in May (my 60’s birthday) to Spain and 10 days England in June by motorhome just before it really starts raining all over.
Hm maybe a couple of days to Croatia on family visit in September makes here mood some better
what’s the climatically message warming up/ new ice age ?
be careful out there guys !!!
what's the climatically message
more extremes around the world was predicted as part of climate change
certainly been happening…used to be that you went years between extreme events, now its one extreme to the next…
When is it snow and when isnt it ?
In our location it produced falling snow flaks but it didnt settle at all, does that count as snow ?
Sort of a gotcha question, but to me it isnt snow if it doesnt settle.
Here in the UK the Met Office definition of a White Christmas is a single snow flake falling in the 24 hours on the 25th December, so I would guess that snow flakes falling is a valid definition and that it does not need to settle.

I’d dearly love for it to snow here, just once! But living in the Los Angeles area I doubt it will ever happen
Heck, I was 42 years old before I ever actually saw snow falling in person, and only because I happened to be in Lake Tahoe on a short vacation. I’m sure people passing by were looking at me strangely because I pulled to the side of the road, got out, and just stood there watching it fall!
Great shot, Brian
So in Barrington Christchurch, on top of earthquake damage, we now have snow damage - the snow sliding of the roof has broken the gutters ( again - 1st was July 25th this year) - 2 days off work raking snow out of doorways & remaining gutters - had 8" on Monday which melted to about 3", then had a further 8 - 9" Early Tuesday AM, to see us wake up to 10-12 " . EQC did a damage assessment yesterday & we are in the $10-100,000 damage bracket. The house is on the market, & we are shifting to Blenheim, to a warmer clime ! We have a very good offer on the table , so hopefully by approx mid - end October ‘Barrington Weather’ will morph into ‘BLENHEIM Weather’. For our overseas friends Blenheim is at the top of the South Is. of NZ. There will be a short period off the air once we pack up but hope only around 14 days ! - To add insult to injury we were woken at 0514 NZST this morning - epicentre 17 km away - http://quake.crowe.co.nz/.
If you look in front of the car you can see the spouting & fascia drooping down !
Thanks for the picture. Good luck with the house sale and the move.
Cheers

Personaly i hope this is an indication of that the snow “border” has “tilted” upwards, so that this will be the first ever winter without snow in Norway…

This was a great thread!
I hope NZ has a nice hot summer, at least in the North to make up for the cold winter! At least it was wet snow that did not seem to be accumulating much or whatever did stick would not hang around long enough to require plowing.
I saw this video a while back, shows how much snow really fell in some places. Also amazing how a little bit of elevation can have a significant impact.
