Just because I live in Phoenix doesn’t mean I’m a Cardinal Fan…
I remember when I moved here the theme that year was “The Cardnials are seeing RED!” on billboards all over town…
They were right… RED INK!
I still root for the Chargers in that I’m from San Diego…
Thought the Cardinals might actually be “better” this year… first game was a joke.
I’ll stick to College Pigskin… I don’t think they make soccer balls out of pigskin.
you're using a "real" football (you throw the ball).
I didn’t see the original quote with “real” in it, so I’m assuming this was actually said.
I’m not sure about insulting 90% of the planet, but perhaps Tim could do some investigations into the origins of ‘real football’ and report back to us here As a pointer, real football originated in England long before America (as in US) existed. I think there are reports of football being played in London in around 1175. Back then I suspect that it was really more akin to rugby than to soccer though.
At the risk of being controversial…
As someone said in the other thread here in the UK people go to a fight and a game of soccer breaks out. I think that is why some believe that Soccer is a Gentlemans game played by hooligans, and Rugby is a hooligans game played by Gentlemen!
As to insulting 90% of the planet I’m not sure I understand the context, however I would have thought that considerably more than 90% of the planet don’t understand American Football (NFL or College or whatever other kinds there might be), probably 90% have not even heard of it!
At least there is not (as far as I am aware) a ‘World Series’ for American Football containing only two countries!
Stuart
I did watch a lot of it in the 90’s, when THE team was the 49ers. That Joe Montana was the dogs.
Enough said
Fun game
Do I not like the term “Soccer” Its FOOTBALL and its the only one amongst the bunch that is actually played with the FEET.
The name ‘soccer’ is almost as old as the game as we know it today (as opposed to the earlier combinations of rugby/soccer/etc that existed).
Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the Association several months later. The name Association Football was coined to distinguish it from Rugby.By 1889, the abbreviation socca’ was in use, and the spelling soccer had made its appearance by 1895.
From the Wikipedia:
"Football is the name given to a number of different team sports. The most popular of these are Association football (also known as soccer), Rugby football (Rugby union and Rugby league), American football, Australian rules football, Gaelic football, and Canadian football.
When the English language word “football” originated, it referred to a wide variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot
Lets go Eagles!
Looks like the Patriots vs. Steelers game should be good this weekend…

Lets go Eagles!
Ahhhh…Time to resurrect this topic. 8)
So how’s everyone’s (“NFL”) Football team doing?
–Tim
Not very well. The players seem to be very expensive, so I’ve not been able to afford my first one yet. Remind me…how many do I need to make a whole team?
Nice one, Chris!

A possible drug scare for the Washington Redskins delayed Friday’s practice nearly two hours recently after a player reported finding a white powdery substance on the field. The head coach immediately suspended game while the police and federal investigators were called into investigate.
After a complete analysis, FBI forensicexperts determined that the white substance unknown to the players was the goal line.
The practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again anytime soon
I just missed it when it was done… apparently during the Pats Miami game, Doug Floute did something not done since 1941.
He performed a sucsessful Drop Kick for an extra point.
I was amazed that the wikipedia had already been updated when I looked for info on a drop kick this evening…
The only execution of the drop kick in the modern-day NFL was by Doug Flutie, quarterback of the New England Patriots, against the Miami Dolphins on January 1, 2006 for an extra point after a touchdown. This was the first successful drop kick since 1941, when it was executed by Chicago’s Ray “Scooter” McLean in the Bears’ 37-9 victory over the New York Giants on Dec. 21.
Flutie’s drop-kick was a farewell gesture by Coach Bill Belichick for Flutie in what is expected to be his last regular season game before retirement; it was not a strategic move.
If he had missed it, it would only been a loss of a single point.
The Pats went on to lose the game 28 - 26.
Also for a kicking record, the (out of the playoffs again no surprise) Phoneix Cardninals had their kicker set an All Time Single Season NFL record 40 field goals in a year. Neil Rackers, set the record near the end of the game in a loss against the Colts. Racker was already selected for the Pro Bowl this year.
