Moving to another machine

This is the 99th time you people have seen this topic.

I’ve successfully done this before. For some reason I’m having a ton of problems this time.

  1. V10.35L (non-memory management version)
  2. From a WIN98 desktop to a WIN98 laptop (192 meg, 366 MHz PII, ThinkPad 770z)
  3. WDISPLAY.INI in c:\wdisplay changed from read only to permit writing to.
Did this before with a the same hardware Thinkpad 600E successfully.
  4. Copied all c:\wdisplay\files and subdirectory files to the new machine.

Here’s the list of problems:

  1. Every startup it wants to create C:\WDISPLAY\logfiles\xxx.txt high definition graphics files.
  2. Com port is now 1 . This does get remembered. It is the right port.
  3. WD totally has forgotten that the wx station is a Dallas one wire. Tell it that and it finds all instruments/roms. However, when I save, exit and restart, it still doesn’t remember the station type.
  4. No graphs but flat lines. Can’t even pull up history info – even though all log files etc are there.
  5. Comes up in metric even though the settings file says otherwise
  6. Solar mv is correct but percent is always 0 percent on solar setup and screen
  7. Barometer reads when forced to but doesn’t do so periodically. Reading appears right.
  8. Reading offsets and biases are present in the screen as is solar stuff.

In otherwords, it is suffering from a huge case of amnesia. All files I know about are there.

Probably something simple. After half a day of messing around, I’m asking for help.

Brian,

Did you complete a backup of WD first and then run wdisplayftp.reg on the new machine to execute the registry entries as noted here?

“1) Every startup it wants to create C:\WDISPLAY\logfiles\xxx.txt high definition graphics files.”

What version did you install on the new machine?

Suffering from brain failure here.

  1. did the registry thing. No change

Did not do an “install” on new machine rather just copied files. Version is same as on old machine 10.35L. The above link indicates that copying files is OK.

I also note that there is no time in the time stamp region. It is just a black square with a hyphen in the middle.

Also get odd error message about WDISPLAY.INI. Even though I changed its status from “archive” to no boxes checked, it still says it can’t write to it.

Directory structure is identical as is the drive letter.

Perhaps unistall it all and try again doing the wdisplayftp.reg chick first?

You need to do an official “install” first. Then copy over all files.

i cant remember which version, but the wdisplay.ini changed from being in c:\windows or c:\winnt to being where you have wd installed
(but copy it to those other locations in case the version you have still uses those)
also, why not take the opportunity to upgrade to a better OS and higher spec pc and then run a more recent version of wd?

I apologize if this is a duplicate posting.

Is there a full install version for 10.35L available? Understand >10.33 puts WDISPLAY.INI in wdislay directory.

I assume after the full install, I can copy datafiles and WDISPLAY.INI over and thus restore what I currently have working on the old machine?

Reason for not going to new machine/OS:

  1. 10.35L works OK on 98 desktop
  2. laptop was $50. Want smaller footprint/energy use relative to dedicate laptop.

Had gotten 10.35l to work OK on spouse’s ThinkPad600E with same horsepower/memory as this “new” laptop. Kicking myself for selling it…

For what it is worth. I found the year of the laptop set to 2029. Maybe that is why time didn’t show up on screen?

The use here is very simple. No web stuff. Just display instrument readings and save them.

Brian

Brian,

I have 10.35.exe and 10.35b.exe on my download page. The closest I have to 10.35L would be 10.35M which I can upload if you want to try that…

http download is here:
http://JaxWeatherCam.net/WD-Past/

I also have created a FTP Read Only Login for that directory (if you would rather use FTP rather then http download):
ftp.JaxWeatherCam.net
username: xjaxweathercam-WDPast
password: weatherdisplay1
(User and Password are cASe sensitive)

Thanks Bob.

I’ll try getting 10.35 going first. Have the zip file for the program only for 10.35L so I can get back to my 10.35L version.

Brian

Windows 2000 should run OK on that hardware, and would be a lot better.

Got 10.35 running. Overlayed 10.35L and the .INI files. It is working.

However, it comes up and says software expires yesterday (which it thinks is Saturday Sept 22, 2007!) but still runs.

Old registration number doesn’t eliminate this.

Have requested new registration #. Hopefully that will solve this.

Progress.

Regarding win2000. I don’t know if it means anything but a sticker on PC says for NT and WIN98.

Thanks guys.

Brian,

If the machine says compatible with NT, Win 2K should work fine with it and far more stable then 98…

Thanks all. Did have to fix a flat barometer line problem with the AAG barometer.

It has given me problems in the past. None of the suggestions in past postings helped.

What apparently fixed it was to remove and then try and reinstall the com port.
It failed to re-install and put WINDOWS in a mode trying to install it each start up and hanging.

Finally, reinstalling operating system reinstalled the port and fixed barometer problem. Something was evidently corrupted.

Or maybe the allignment of the moon and stars was proper…

In short, the procedure outlined in the various posts for moving to a new machine did not work for me.

What did work was: WD registry key is gone, all WD files are gone and do a completly new re-install of a version known to work previously. It still resulted in having to re-register the program with Brian. Makes sense.
