This has been discussed before but there seems to be a number of different opinions on the subject so I thought I’d ask:
I am moving from Windows 98 on an old computer to Windows XP on a new computer. How do I efficently move WD across to the new machine? Of course, I have to copy the WD directory and files across but what is the best way to handle the registry transplant, etc.?
if you are going to move a lot of files, I would get one of those data moving programs for just that reason. I have never used it, but Windows XP has a file transfer program that should do that. I would check that out or perhaps someone might let you know.
I would do a clean install of WD on your new computer. Then copy your web file folder, data folder and log folder to that new install on the new computer.
Copy the registration number and write to Brian for a new activation code. It seems the code has to do with the new program anyway, so you will need one. but Write to him directly.
Re-configure your settings on the new install in the mean time and then do your weather program. WHen the code comes in the email then install it and your in business.
To copy the files, again, you can do several things. Either copy each file via a file transfer program , disk, zip disk or email the files to yourself, then copy from that way. You can also zip them and email.
Since I have extensive configurations and data in WD for the multitude of servers and services that I use it for, a clean install of it would be far to time consuming and error prone, and I’d only do that if presented with no other viable options. Moving the files themselves is easy since both machines are on my home network; the registry entries are the only sticky point as I understand it…
Thanks,
Tom

There is only one registry file, Wdisplay.ini
it is C:\WINDOWS. You can copy that then past the past back into C:\WINDOWS when you set up new os. Or there is a backup-ini file in the c:\wdisplay called wdisplayinibackup. Just past into c:\windows in new os, and rename wdisplay.ini. I have done it several time, and it works.
It is my understanding that there are also entries in the windows registry that need to be transferred across, no? If not, that makes it exceptionally easy…

When i did it, the only thing lost was the times for the wunderground times (not name or password), hamweather times(not name or password), and everything under aprs. I may have lost the web-upload times and ftp server name, password, what is uploaded etc. But besides just a few easily replaced things, it was ok. Keep all the data and records. And i did it from 98 to xp too.
There’s a bunch of info on the weather display site about exporting the registry that may help you. I’m facing the same move so I’ll be interested to hear how it goes.
all the internet settings are in the registry, the wdisplay.ini file is for all else
in version 9.96b or later, in wd, go to action, backup registry, click on backup, then the settings are saved in the file wdisplayftp.reg in the folder databackup
just double click that file on the new PC
but fi still not loaded the settings, then run regedit.exe then search for wdisplayftp.ini
if there is another one, with less data, then look at the path for each key
you will then need to change the path in the wdisplayftp.reg file you have copied across to the new pc and then double click it agian
