My ISP has just written to say that they’re going to give me some more bandwidth for nothing! Earlier this year I (only!) had a 2M/256k (down/upload) service. They gave me a free upgrade to 3MB/256k. In the next 4-6 weeks they’re upgrading me again, to 4MB/384k this time and it won’t cost me a penny extra
I’ll have to see what other weather data I can find to down/upload!
thats good
i am on a new ISP, wireless, now 1M download, and up to 650K upload! (its supposed to ne 1M upload too, but it does not seem to rech that speed) (its around 250k for the WD ftp server, but I have had 650k for another ftp server)
Wow - you guys are getting some serious upload!
I just graduated from satellite (40k upload) to cable (256k upload) and can’t believe what I have been missing. I have one more upgrade to do soon to (512k upload).
I was paying $60 month on satellite for 900k down / 40k up.
Now paying $55 month on cable for 3000k down / 256k up.
Upgrade will be $60 month on cable for 4000k down / 512k up.
How are your ISP’s with static IP’s and allowing running of servers? That seems to command a premium over here now.
I don’t know who to believe anymore, first they say the internet is over-built with tons of un-used bandwidth, fiber, etc. Then when you go to get your account, bandwidth is at a premium and you must pay through the nose to get any…
Static IPs only come with business accounts costing about 3 times what I pay. You can run a server, but only for llimited inbound use (max 10 users). This is all to limit the amount of ‘upload’ bandwidth used. The ISPs sell this to big commercial customers at huge bucks to host the big web sites on!

Yep, similar over here. Little guys like me who want to host a weather website have very few affordable choices for ISP’s anymore. Luckily I found a satellite provider who offers static IP’s and doesn’t mind servers being run on the customers site. Of course I don’t get anywhere near your b/w and doubt satellite will ever reach those upload speeds. FCC has kept the power level low enough to ensure that never happens.
Most UK ISPs provide personal web space, often without any bandwidth limitations. My ISP offers 30MB free with no bandwidth requirements, or 100MB +PHP/Perl scripting for
Here the phone companies just about shut the 3rd party DSL providers out of the market so for most people who have high speed available there’s not much competition, the (one) phone co, or the (one) cable co.
In the beginning I just wanted to learn Linux. I think it was just a natural progression, in my learning, to setup web, dns, mail, and ftp servers. My job required me to know Unix and Linux was a great learning tool. Later on I discovered that nobody else manages my data better than I do
Yes, satellite has high latency, but it is the only high speed access available where I live. Satellite is much better than dial-up, and I support numerious computer users here! Once I get moved to my new location I will be able to get wireless from my old ISP but I have to finish the satellite obligation period first
FWIW, I also use VPN here for my work. Never had a problem.
