Lightning Detectors and WD

gidday guys…

I was haveing a look at the Boltek site this afternoon (and I want one) but can’t really justify the 600US+ to buy one…anyone else got any good ideas for a detector that is cheaper/easy to build/locally available? And WD compatible!!! I have to say I like the Boltek detector and mapping software, it looked very slick…is anyone using a Boltek on here?

cheers
Andrew

check out the tips and tricks section of this BBS
it has info on how you can add a 1 wire lightning counter to WD
for only 40$ or so
i have one, works great, and there are 2 more in use here in the auckland area

I am using a Boltek LD-250, but can’t get it to work on my dedicated weather PC. It works on four other ones in the house, but not the one I want it to. Is it possible to connect wd to Nexstorm over a network to view strike data in wd?

Funny you should ask :) It's something that we're currently working on. Eventually hope to get a display running in WDL similar to the Nexstorm java applet. Whether it will work over a network though I'm not sure.

I see you have one, and guessed there may be something in the pipe line. Just how acurate are they, because mine never reads the same as yours!

the wd/nexstorm marriage uses a shared memory address…
i dont think that would work over a network though

They aren’t that accurate. If you go to the Astrogenics site they link to quite a few websites in the UK and near continent. Whenever there’s a lot of activity I compare sites and although most are fairly similar (one or two are completely different!) you couldn’t rely upon them for absolute positioning. They do seem to give a pretty good impression of the overall level of activity though.

The day mine arrived, a house about 1 mile from us was hit by lightning, and burnt down. If I’d have been home earlier, I would have had it set up.
